ABSTRACT

Virtual Tourism: a realistic assessment of virtual reality for the tourist industry

Cooper M. & Benjamin I. 1994

This paper suggests that the hyperbole of virtual reality goes well beyond its capabilities now, and its likely capabilities in the medium-term future. The practical application of virtual reality centres on its ability to model places, buildings and information in three dimensions. We argue that the commercial use of virtual reality in tourism will be closely linked to developments in the use of broadband telecommunications and tele-media technology for sales and marketing, not as a substitute for travel itself.
