Ichi Byo Shi Kendo Club -

Q: Is there an age limit for Kendo?
A: There is no upper age limit and there are practicioners who are in their 90's. However, for the Aylesburyclub's purposes, there is a minimum required age of 16.
Juniors are welcome at Hemel Hempstead from 8 upwards.
Q: Do I need any special equipment?
A: Not initially. Comfortable work out clothing is fine for the practice sessions. After around 4 months or so, the kendo clothing and equipment will start to be introduced.
Q: Martial arts are usually quite physically demanding, do I need to be in good shape to participate?
A: With any physical activity it is always good to have a degree of fitness and the same applies to Kendo. The moves in Kendo will feel unusual to normal 'exercise' and yes, you will sweat. But an average fitness level is fine for the most part. If you do have any health concerns, consult your doctor before starting and let your sensei know.
Q: Is it an expensive sport?
A: No more expensive than any other club you might pay for. The only real expense
is buying the bogu (Kendo armour) -
Q: Is it a male only sport?
A: Absolutly not. Kendo opens the door to both male and female kendoka. Skill isn't measured by gender in this sport.
Q: What if I don't like it?
A: Take advantage of the free initial session, that way you can get a feel for the sport and make a better educated decision.
Q: What is the BKA membership about?
A: In order to practice kendo you MUST be registered with the British Kendo Association first. Your temporary membership must be changed into a full one if you wish to continue practicing past the first three months. Once you do this you will receive your grade book which will allow you to take examinations at a later date and keep track of your kendo qualifications.
