Ickleton United Charities

Some of our village charities date back to the Middle Ages, with evocative names such as Town Housen, Lettice Martin’s Bequest, and The Charity of Richard Swan.  In 1970 they were registered with the Charity Commissioners and grouped into two separately administered funds, being Relief in Need and The Gertrude Homes.

The Relief in Need charity provides assistance to any Ickleton parishioner who is ‘in need, hardship or distress’, and our income comes primarily from two houses in Mill Lane which are owned by the Charity. At Christmas we distribute vouchers to the elderly and those in need, and we often pay for ‘Lifelines’ for those who require them. We welcome requests from those who believe that they would qualify for our assistance.

The Gertrude Homes charity administers three almshouses in the village, which were completely renovated in 2008.  These are normally allocated to people who have or have had strong connections to Ickleton, and vacancies when they arise are advertised in the Iceni and on village notice boards.

The Trustees, who meet on average four times a year, are currently:

Richard Herbert (Chairman)

Jocelyn Flitton (Clerk)

John Statham (Hon. Treasurer)

The Vicar

Lewis Duke , David Lilley, Derek Rule, Betty Willmott, Mary Wombwell

Please address any correspondence to the Clerk in the first instance, Jocelyn Flitton at 1 Abbey Street .
