MARCH 2003
Parish Council Elections
In May this year the Parish Council must be re-elected. If anyone is interested in serving the
community by standing for election as a Parish Councillor, I will have the
appropriate nomination forms available shortly. If anyone wants to know what being a parish councillor involves,
please talk to our Chairman, James Macdonald, or any other current member of
the council. Ickleton has nine parish
councillors, who meet on the third Wednesday of each month at 7.30 pm in the
village hall. If nine are nominated
there is no need for an election; if more than nine, then we have a contested
election, which will take place on 1 May 2003.
Flooding Thank
you to everyone who came to the flooding meeting in the village in early
February. The Parish Council is
continuing to look at the problem and will let you know our thoughts and plans
as soon as possible.
Snow and Ice Thank you,
too, to everyone who turned out to bring hot drinks and food to motorists
trapped all night on the motorway in freezing conditions. Letters of appreciation have been received
at the shop and via the village website.
Dog Fouling We have
received complaints again about dog fouling, particularly in Church
Street. Please act responsibly when
walking your dogs around the village and go out equipped with plastic bags.
Remember that if you are seen not to clear up after your dog, you could be
liable for a fine of up to £1,000.00.
We have asked the Dog Warden to visit.
Recycling collection Please note that this is now on alternate
Wednesdays, 5 and 19 March.
The contractors are coming much earlier now, so it is advisable to put
your green boxes out the night before.
Wellcome Trust, Southfield Project Work on fencing the site has continued
during February. Earth moving machinery
has begun work on a car park area and on the temporary site access road from
the A1303. Excavation of an underground
car park will begin shortly. Remodelling the existing campus entrance roads and
security point also continues. During
March excavation and drainage work will continue across the whole site and a
temporary accommodation block will be erected as well as temporary car parking
for construction personnel.
Parking May we remind
you that it is an offence to park opposite a dropped kerb. A dropped kerb marks access to a driveway or
garage and there is therefore no kerb stone.
If you park opposite it makes access difficult or impossible.

You have a
wonderful village!
Last night my
husband, who is partially sighted, and his driver were stranded on the M11 from
5.00 p.m. until noon today.
This morning
people from the village and surrounding areas came to their aid with hot drinks
and food. You cannot believe how welcome this was to them, and I’m sure the
other stranded people on that part of the motorway.
Can I, through
the website, say a big thank you to everyone who helped these motorists. You have a wonderful spirit - long may it
continue. Many thanks, Karenna Galer, via Ickleton Website.
I am sure we all
appreciated Dilip and Sunita at our shop when we were snowed up. Also thanks to Plumb and Webb who got
through with their milk delivery. There
were no buses, but the trains kept moving.
Perhaps all the
above deserve more support on less inclement days!

Would you like to befriend a prisoner? Many prisoners
at nearby Highpoint Prison have no-one to write to them or visit them. We are hoping to arrange a training event
for anyone interested in this worthwhile way of supporting those struggling to
build new lives. Ring Jane Charman ' if you would like more information.
The revision of the Church Electoral Roll will be
taking place in the middle of March. A
copy of the roll will be displayed in the Church porch between 25th
February and 11th March, and will then be revised. Please would anyone who wishes to add their
name to the list, or who knows of a name which should be removed, please
contact me.
A copy of the revised roll will be displayed in the
porch between 19th March and 2nd April.

Everyone associates Lent with ‘giving up’ and each
year I’m surprised by the number of people who actually do give up some of
their comforts and luxuries during Lent, as a way of deepening their spiritual
life and perhaps also saving some money to give to a good cause.
This year in the Five Villages we shall be collecting
during Lent for Christian Aid using their ‘Count your Blessings’
programme. There’s a sheet for young
people and a different one for adults with a thought for each day and a
suggestion for charitable giving. For
instance, on the first day of Lent you might be invited to donate lp for every
pancake you ate the night before.
Suggestions on other days include 2p each time you
turn on a tap, 3p if you’ve drunk milk today, 5p if you watch TV and so
on. You’ll be surprised how much you
end up with if you keep going throughout Lent.
You don’t have to be a churchgoer to join in. Sheets are available from the Post Offices as well as from all
the Churches and all you need apart
from that is a jam jar to put your money in.
At the end of Lent we’ll have a grand totalling up and with any luck
we’ll have raised a sum to be proud of, to show that people in these villages
really do care about what’s happening to our brothers and sisters elsewhere in
the world.
As well as our Lent Appeal we also have some special
events going on during Lent. On
Tuesdays at 2.00 p.m. our Lent Study Group will be using the Diocesan Lent
Course ‘Encounters with Jesus’ which ties in with a Monday evening broadcast on
Radio Cambridgeshire from 7 – 8 p.m. starting on the 10th
March. The Study Group will be in
Duxford URC on 11th March, Hinxton Village Hall on 18th
March and Ickleton Methodist Chapel on 25th March. On
Wednesdays there will be a short
reflective Lent Service each evening at
8.00 p.m. These will be in Duxford
Parish Church on 12th March, Hinxton Parish Church on 19th
March and Ickleton Parish Church on 26th March. On Thursdays at 12.30 p.m. there will be a
Lent Lunch, a simple meal with a spiritual as well as a nutritional
content. All of these will be in
Duxford URC.
For full details of the Lent Appeal and all Lenten
activities, pick up a leaflet from any of the Churches or from the Post Office.
With God’s Blessing

This will take place on Saturday 15th
March starting at 10.00 a.m.
Please come and help us with the spring clean. Our beautiful church is already in excellent
condition, thanks to the team of regular cleaners who operate throughout the
year, but at the annual clean we get into those tricky ancient corners that are
usually inaccessible! There are jobs
outside in the churchyard as well as inside. If you want to see our medieval
building in a different way, come along and help. Tea, coffee, biscuits and cake will be served during the morning
to help us along. However, we hope to
finish by late morning and retire to the pub at lunchtime for alternative
refreshments.

SOCIAL CLUB A.G.M.
This year’s A.G.M. was held on the 28th
January and despite the bad weather was well attended.
The treasurer reported that 2002 had been a
financially successful year with the year end balance being up on the previous
year.
A small increase on the price of some drinks was
proposed by the committee, but most club drink prices will be maintained at approximately
half that of Public House prices.
If anyone can help out on the bar from time to time,
or better still on a regular basis, please contact any member of the committee
at the club between 8.00 p.m. and 11.00 p.m. any evening.
The first quiz night of 2003 will be held at 8.45
p.m. on the 8th March. There
will be a raffle, quiz prizes, and a free buffet.
Entry to the quiz will be £1.00 per person for teams
of up to 4 players.
Any member and all guests will be welcome.

There will be a
combined Jumble Sale/Plant Sale on Saturday April 12th at 2.00 p.m.
in the Village Hall. Future events
still at the planning stage are: Bingo
Night sometime in May; Art and Crafts Fayre in June; and Ickleton Pub Crawl and
Treasure Hunt in July, and at some point a concert featuring local bands. We hope you will enjoy these as social
events too.

A new kind of bogus caller has been operating this
year. This time it is a telephone
caller pretending to be calling from the gas, water, electricity or telephone
company asking you when you will not be at home as he has to call on you. If you receive such a call, ask the caller
for an account number, if he is genuine
he will have this information, otherwise do not give information as to when you
will or will not be at home.
A campaign has recently been launched by the Home
Office urging motorists to lock their car whenever they leave it ‘and never
leave stuff on show’. The £5 million
campaign – ‘Don’t Give Them an Easy Ride’
aims to reduce car crime by providing practical steps to motorists which
can prevent their vehicle being targeted by criminals. The good news is it’s easy to outsmart the
criminal – just don’t leave anything in your car when you leave it parked,
especially at night. Mobile phones,
laptop computers, cheque books, even an old coat on the back seat might tempt
someone to smash and grab - just in
case it’s valuable.
74% of vehicle crime happens during the hours of
darkness and 64% occurs when the car is parked in the vicinity of the owner’s
home.
For those on the internet further tips on how to
prevent car crime can be found at:

THE
CHESTERFORDS, ICKLETON AND HINXTON W.I.
This month’s talk was on the Treasure Trove from Ashdon. The very title conjures up the imagination,
and Cherry Fisher’s talk was spell binding. You imagine going for a walk,
seeing something glitter in the bank and digging out a rabbit hole to disclose
a hoard of coins dating from King
Ferdinand of Naples’ reign in 1504, Mary Tudor, Elizabeth I, James I and ending
with Charles I reign. Approx 1100
silver coins and two 22ct gold coins were retrieved - possibly hidden by a Royalist
to prevent Oliver Cromwell’s men getting their hands on them.
At
today’s valuation they would
only be worth £64, but that was a lot of money in those days.
After much to-do with the British Museum and a court
hearing they were declared treasure trove.
Cherry was allowed to keep 900 coins, some of which she brought along
nicely displayed in a case. The rest
she has sold at auction and in all received about £9000. Not bad for a Sunday afternoon’s walk! She has vowed however never to eat
rabbit again!
Next meeting March 19th A.G.M. and Buffet Supper.

You may have heard that from April 2003 the Government is changing the way your Pension or Benefit is paid to you. Pension and Benefit books will be phased out and the Department of Works and Pensions will pay your money directly into an account. This is why pinpads have already been installed on the counters in the Post Office in preparation for the change. Tony Blair guarantees, “You will still be able to collect your pension or benefit in cash at your local Post Office.”
There will be three types of account that your
pension or benefit can be paid into –
The Post Office Card Account – An easy account to
handle
The Department of Works and Pensions credits your
account.
You draw cash, free of charge, at your
local Post Office, as and when you want.
The Post Office Card Account will be
available from April to everyone drawing pension or Benefit, including those with existing bank accounts.
Pensions and Benefits can be drawn, free of charge, at your local Post
Office.
Bank or Building Society Current Account – Provided
by major Banks etc.
Currently several banks allow free deposits and withdrawals at your
local Post Office.
If your bank is not one of those listed below, why not ask when you will be able to use the P Post Office.
Alliance and
Leicester, Co-operative Bank, Barclays Bank, Lloyds TSB Bank, Cahoot Internet
Bank, Smile Internet Bank.
You don’t need to
do anything until you receive a letter from the Department of Works and
Pensions. If you have any questions or
need any more information, talk to us – we are here to help you.

Scheme in their Outpatients Department.
We have agreed to this. We take patients to the Babraham Park and Ride
and fetch them from there when they ring to say that they are leaving the
hospital.
We agreed with the hospital that patients who cannot
use the bus will be able to use the hospital car service. It is only in an emergency that we can take

The Chairman James Macdonald welcomed members to the first meeting of the New Year. Despite the freezing conditions, 39 enthusiastic members turned out to hear Mr. Moores from St. Ives (accompanied by his wife) talk and demonstrate with slides, ideas for a small garden, and they were not disappointed!
All those lovely ornamental trees, shrubs etc. you’ve
thought were too large can now be bought and grown as dwarfs or trained as bush
varieties - they can even be grown in tubs or large pots. The new ideas were
endless, giving a new conception of small gardens.
The next meeting on March 5th will be the
Spring Party when we will make our little grey cells work overtime with the various
quizzes devised by our Vice Chairman Pauline Gale.

several businesses interested so far. If you would like more information about
this, or would like to help us at the Church Fete, please give me a ring.
We are very lucky to have such a lovely Church in our village, and this event helps with the running costs of our Church. The Churchwardens and Parochial Church Council are as always very grateful for your continued support.
