Skate Park Project We are
pleased to report that, following a generous offer of a substantial donation
from the Wellcome Trust (Hinxton Hall Ltd), we are in a position to go ahead
with installing the skate park facility.
All the funds needed are now available.
Thanks are due to all those who have made donations, initiated and taken
part in fund raising activities and contributed to making possible this
facility for the young people in our village.

Compensation for Power Cuts, October 2002 Our MP Andrew Lansley has written to tell
us that Ofgem has recently announced the completion of their determination of
compensation claims from customers. If
you were without electricity for more than 42 hours last October and made a
claim, EDF Energy (formerly 24seven) should be compensating you shortly.
Opportunity for People Living With Chronic Conditions
The Primary Care Trust has introduced a new initiative to help people with
long term conditions. There is a poster

From time to time in our group of parishes we have someone on placement with us who is in training for ministry. For instance, some of you may remember Richard Finch and Steve Morgan, both now ordained to the priesthood. From October this year, Jose John will be joining us for a short placement as part of her training to become a Reader. I’ve asked her to write a little bit about herself as an introduction. Please give her a warm welcome if you should come across her.

From October to December
this year I shall, as part of my Reader training, be on placement in your parishes
under the care of the Revd. Charman and Mrs Julie Baillie, who have already
given me such a warm and caring welcome, together with much information to
read, that I feel I already know something about each parish, but I look
forward to learning more. I have been
asked to tell you a little about myself, so here goes!
My name is Jose John. I'm
61 and live in Sawston - I'm Sawston born and bred. After I married I lived in
Cambridge for 29 years, moving back to Sawston 8 years ago, a year before my
husband's death. I've been a Secretary
all my working life and am working part time at a small independent Trust in
Cambridge; prior to that I was Departmental Secretary/Secretary to the Head of
the Department at the Archaeology Department of Cambridge University for almost
12 years.
I have only been a
committed Christian for about 11 years, though confirmed at 12 and having
attended Sunday School and the Girls Friendly Society regularly, I hadn’t
attended church regularly for many years.
My father’s death brought me back into the church. He died from cancer – but when I saw him at
the funeral parlour he looked just as he had before his many illnesses – I
believed strongly that he had been made well and had gone to heaven. After around a year I began to attend St.
Peter’s, Babraham regularly (I still lived in Cambridge then),

and very soon became a
Churchwarden and then a little later PCC Secretary - and I still am! I was intending to retire to Norfolk but my
plans have been altered by the arrival of our new vicar, Revd. Dr Giles
Kendall. (He is Vicar of St. Mary's, Sawston and Priest-in-Charge of St.
Peter's, Babraham). As Churchwarden and PCC Secretary I became more and more
involved in assisting him in his duties and was beginning to feel I would like
to do more and that I no longer wished to move. Then one day, just over a year ago, we were planning a Family
Service for St. Peter's when he suddenly said, "You ought to train as a
Reader." I believe that God gave
him these words and through them confirmed that it was He who was calling me to
serve Him, rather than me just wanting to do more. I'm now about to start my 5th module of eight on Church History,
combining the work for this with my placement.
Because of restraints on time I may not be able to take part in
everything, but I very much want to be involved in as much as possible. I'm looking forward to meeting the members
of the PCCs in each parish during September.
I feel I have somewhat tenuous links with Hinxton and Duxford: I worked as a secretary at Hinxton Hall when it housed Tube Investments - my father also worked there as the Chief Photographer; at Duxford I was a Sales Secretary at CIBA Giegy. I very much look forward to meeting as many of you as I can and to sharing ministry with your ministerial team, and already have the distinct feeling that my time with you will be exciting, interesting and of great value to me in both my own Christian journey and my training as a Reader. I have been notified of two incidents since the last
Bulletin, both took place at the end of August, in Abbey Street. A vehicle rear window was smashed but no
entry was gained and a house window was smashed whilst the occupant was on
holiday.
Of most general concern are two separate reports of
people claiming to represent the Fire Service calling on householders.
The first was when a man called on residents in a
village, he told one householder that her windows would not be safe in the
event of a fire and asked to be allowed to inspect them. When she refused he became unpleasant.
The second incident occurred when a resident received
a telephone call from an organisation calling itself the European Fire Service
Authority. The caller said they would
be in the area Wednesday and would be happy to visit the property.
We do have a Community Fire Safety Unit but it does
not operate in the above fashion and has no activity in progress in this
area. If a fire occurs in a property
without a smoke alarm or there is some other lesson to be learnt then a fire
engine and its crew will return later to leaflet surrounding properties
offering advice.
Anyone approached by an unknown caller should ask for
identification and if in any doubt do not allow them to enter your
property. It is also advisable to
report the matter to the police. If a
caller claims to represent the Fire Service
their credentials can be checked by calling ' 01480 444500.

The August quiz night was again a great evening with
10 teams competing and only 2 points separating the eventual winners and second
and third places.
THE NEXT QUIZ NIGHTwill be held on 4thOctober at 9.00p.m.max
4 per team,£1.00 per person.
This year’s ‘Children in Need’ Quiz will be held on
15th November at 9.00 p.m. There should be a maximum of 4 persons
per team, £2.00 per person. There will
also be a mystery ‘Children in Need’ darts night on 22nd
November. Players of all skill levels
should have an equal chance of winning.
All proceeds from the children in need events and raffles will be
donated to the charity.
There will be a free buffet and prizes plus raffle at
all of the above evenings. Please come and join in. We are sure you will have a

AUCTION OF PROMISES
Saturday November 8th, Abbey Farm 8.00 p.m.
By now, everyone should have received their invitation
to the Auction of Promises and we look forward to seeing you at Abbey Farm on
the evening of November 8th.
Please come to this all-village event. Promises are
coming in thick and fast, but we need as many as possible, so put your thinking
caps on and let us have your ideas and offers.
If you are offering goods, please deliver them to me or,
nearer the time, to Jenny Duke.
Thank you, in advance, for supporting this event. All
money raised will go towards the upkeep of our beautiful Parish Church.

What a good write up by Mick Bristow in the September edition about the ‘reunion gang’ that met up at the 2003 Fete. I was in Ickleton for three days that weekend and had the most super time, a much needed ‘break’ from the hectic life I seem to have in the Midlands! On the Thursday I went to the former Conservative Club and saw my life-long friend Muriel Barker - I did recognize her, as I’d seen her six years ago. We spoke of the times we used to cycle to Sawston Village Hall dances and my dad used to meet us in Hinxton as we didn’t like to come past the trees and river! I also met Tony Caswell who had cycled over from Duxford. I had spoken to him on the phone so was able to recognize him.
Jack and Derek Bristow are so tall and, I had also
visited Derek and Christine Plumb. Ray
Plumb was also at the club and he looked no different from how I remembered
him. It was great seeing everyone else.
My brother Godfrey Elmes, came from Barry
and he stayed a few days in his campervan. A Friends Re-united e.mail contact Michael Garner (formerly from
Duxford), was also at the fete and has since been up to see us and we had a
great day out on our small cruiser on
the canal. Earlier on in the year I
managed to ‘track down’ Bill Brand, formerly from ‘Providence Cottage. He has
just had a much needed hip op. and was very interested to hear the news. I also e.mailed Graham Morris and told him
of events! Let’s hope if all is well we can get more old friends together next
year. It’s really quite ‘painless’ and a good laugh. There was lots to see at
the fete, and the tractors were good. I saw Dick Wombwell, and I won’t have
been to that farm since I used to ride with his sisters in the 50s. It was lovely to see Tony and Eileen Godfrey
and nice that my cousin Graham Igglesden was able to get to the fete. I’m very
mystified by the name Barbara Gelhaar, the letter she wrote spoke of all the
things we did, but I do not recall the name.
I wish I had had more time to see the ‘archive’ photos, because I got
the shock of my life when I spotted a picture, with my parents on it, and my
late cousin Rosemary Murray. I’m
hoping to get back to Ickleton and see more! Jocelyn Flitton is very recognizable
so I wonder if she can remember the occasion?
My horse and carriage work is still busy with
weddings, we now have two black friesians, and the idea is to ‘up’ the funeral
business, which is quite competitive in the Midlands! Our hearse was used in
the BBC TV ‘Restoration’ programme recently. The horses can really help soften
a bereavement, they are well trained and friendly.
On that note, I will add once more how lovely it was
to have such a good day back in July, with the weather being so kind as
well. Lets hope ‘winter’ isn’t bad and
roll on next summer. Regards to

Barbara Lilley celebrated her 80th
birthday with three birthday parties! She would like to thank Beryl Harris,
Joyce Hutley and Peggy Richardson and the Window of Prayer Group for giving her
three lovely days and thank you to everybody who helped on the day. Thanks also for all the cards and presents.

The Society held its 17th Flower Show at the Great
Chesterford Primary School on the afternoon of Saturday 6th September. Our flower show is only held every other
year, with a much smaller show held in the late autumn in the intervening years.
This year’s show maintained the Society’s best traditions and standards and
there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that it was a great success.
Two years ago, somewhat experimentally, we held the
show in July, but we decided to revert to September this year, and in spite of
the lack of rain in the past three months, that decision was probably
correct. Many of us had wondered
whether there would be any entries at all, our gardens looked so dry! But in
the event the participants did us proud, with a far bigger and better entry
than anyone might have expected. Even
the judges were impressed! In spite of
the rival attraction of the air show, and the occasional (but welcome!) shower
of rain, a lot of people came to see the show, and I am delighted to report
that once again the overall winners were Ickleton residents, Keith and Joan
Sutcliffe, whose entries were of a remarkably high standard.
In addition to the entries of flowers, vegetables,
fruit, cakes and floral art, there was a plant stall, a delicious tea stall run
by Cynthia Rule and the raffle had some excellent prizes. Above all, it was an
enjoyable day for everyone who took part - entrants, judges, visitors and the
hard-working committee members who had ensured its success. James Macdonald
Thirty Years in Ickleton and Great Chesterford (1973
– 2003)
The autumn course started on the 25th
September but it is still not too late to join for the remaining nine sessions
from Thursday 2nd October.
The subject is The Challenge of the Fens (Tutor: Nicholas James) and offers a
kaleidoscope history of the struggle this environment has with nature as well
as revealing the factors that will determine the fenland’s future. This will
take place from 7.45 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. (including coffee break) in the
Congregational Chapel, Carmel Street, Great Chesterford. Fees £28 (£26 concessions) or try this
session for £3 refundable from the course fee.
The Spring 2004 course ‘A Brief Guide to the
Universe’ will start on Thursday 15th January, more details
in the January ICENE.

Preparations are well underway at the Imperial War
Museum Duxford for the Autumn Air Show on Sunday 12th October, the
last major UK air display of 2003. Over
twenty aircraft, vintage and modern will be taking to the air, which is
expected to draw visitors from throughout the UK.
The Autumn Air Show offers one last opportunity to
see air show favourites before the winter, and aircraft taking part will range
from the wartime Spitfire and Mustang through to classic jets and current RAF
fast jets. Visitors who would like to
take to the air themselves will be able to take pleasure flights in a classic
1930s Rapide biplane airliner.
Duxford’s world famous collection of 200 historic
aircraft from biplanes to Concorde will be on show throughout the display,
giving visitors the chance to take a look at Duxford’s latest exhibition, which
forms part of the celebrations for the Centenary of Flight. The 100 Years of flight exhibition pays
tribute to the wonderful legacy of the Wright brothers and illustrates the
effect of war on aviation and particularly how the First and Second World Wars
accelerated technical development.
Gates open at 8.00 a.m. and the flying programme
commences at 1.30 p.m. Tickets – Adults £18, Senior Citizens £13, Children £7,
Concessions £7.

Today’s collection of black wheelie–bins did not go
smoothly. I have been in touch with
the District Council to pass on the complaints which people have made to me,
but it is clear that many people will remain unhappy.
It is still early days, of course, and we must be
tolerant of the District Council as they get accustomed to the new regime. For their part, they must cooperate with us
as we try to meet their new requirements.
It was therefore unacceptable today when they failed to empty wheelie-bins
which had extra bags of rubbish put on them or beside them.
If you have complaints, please get in touch with the
District Council or the helpline (0845 650 0280). It is important that they are made aware of anything that is
going wrong. Meanwhile may I remind you
of some of the features of the new arrangements:

Make sure you
put the right types of rubbish in the black or green wheelie-bins or in
the Green Boxes. They will be rejected if you put the wrong rubbish in
the
wrong containers.
·
If you have
excess rubbish, do not put it in bags next to the wheelie-bins.
It will not be collected. And do not overfill the wheelie-bins. They
will not be emptied
if the lids are the slightest bit open. The rules state that you should
take excess
rubbish to the tip. If you need an extra wheelie-bin, the District
Council
will sell you one.
·
PLEASE do
not get rid of any excess rubbish by dumping it in the Village Hall car park or
leaving it anywhere else. I’m afraid
people have been doing that.
Meanwhile the Parish Council will continue to monitor
the way in which rubbish is collected.
The new arrangements have many poor features, but we will try to make
the best of them and to press for improvements, although you must appreciate
that our influence is limited.

Tiddlywinks was set up a year ago in response to the problems carers with young children have finding something to do in rural areas.
From 24th September Tiddlywinks will be
starting a new session in Ickleton Village Hall on Wednesdays 10.00 a.m. –
12.00 noon.
The fantastic play equipment is new and clean and includes
a special area for babies, a ball pool, soft play shapes, rockers, ride-ons, a
railway, trampoline, pop-ups and inflatables.
The cost is £3 per child (special rates for siblings)
which includes a free tea or coffee.
