Skate Park
Project Good news, the contract has been signed and
work will start shortly. The site,
which is near the basketball practice pitch and almost parallel to the hedge,
is at present marked out with pegs.
Wellcome Trust During
November work will continue on the new campus entrance. Cladding and roofing to
the new buildings will begin shortly.
Landscaping along all perimeters progresses and planting will commence
soon. Remodelling of the wetlands site
(nearest to Ickleton) is complete and seeding has been carried out as well as
preparation for the new woodland planting.
The existing footpath (Grassy Lane) is back to its original route but it
may have to be redirected again, temporarily.
Fireworks Fireworks can be a nuisance to neighbours and
frighten pets, so if you have any for your family, please take care that they
are kept well away from nearby homes.
To warn you about noise, there will be a firework display at the
Wellcome Trust on Friday 7th
November.
Parking We need to
nag again about bad parking habits. It
is an offence to park on the pavement.
Pedestrians, particularly mums with prams, and disabled vehicles, need
to pass freely – it is unacceptable, and highly dangerous, that they should
have to step into the road. If the footpath is blocked the police will be
called. Please let me know if you have
any problems.
Litter on the Recreation Field Please supervise children and see that
they use the bins provided – we should be proud of our lovely field and
excellent play area.
Winter Flooding May we remind you that it is your responsibility to
protect your own home. The Parish
Council is in the process of taking steps to try and reduce the flooding risk
in the village, but extreme conditions often produce problems. Sand and bags are available from the local
Highways Depot at Whittlesford (01223 833717), so be prepared. We will also
have a limited supply available in the garage on the Recreation Field for
emergencies.
Cambridge Independent Advice Centre – a new advice service for people in this
area -specialising in welfare benefits and debt. Telephone advice every Wednesday between 10.00 am and 1.00 p.m.
on ' 01223 712295.
Thanks from the Police Due to the prompt action of a resident in
Grange Road recently, some young men from Saffron Walden were apprehended and
found in possession of drugs. Our
community Beat Officer, Ian Perry, is grateful to that resident and would like
to encourage anyone who sees or hears anything suspicious to telephone the
police at once.
Jackie Casement – Parish Clerk
If you need the Ickleton Medical Car Service.
Gordon and Mary Woolhouse have decided to retire from
delivering the Bulletin to Abbey Street. We would like to thank them for all
their hard work.
We would therefore like a volunteer to take over from
January 2004.

The consecration of a new Bishop is always an exciting time for a Diocese. Following the appointment of Bishop John Flack, the former Bishop of Huntingdon, as Director of the Anglican Centre in Rome, we are now delighted to welcome Bishop John Inge as our new Bishop of Huntingdon. The Bishop of Huntingdon is what’s known as a ‘Suffragan’ Bishop, acting as assistant to the ‘Diocesan’ Bishop of Ely and working closely with him. Bishop John was consecrated in Westminster Abbey on 9th October and has already begun his new ministry amongst us.
For those who don’t know him, a little bit about the new Bishop John. After his ordination in 1984 he began his ministry as a school chaplain, first as Assistant Chaplain at Lancing College and later as Chaplain at Harrow School. In 1990 he became Vicar of Wallsend St Luke in the heart of industrial Tyneside. During his time in the Diocese of Newcastle he also chaired the Board for Mission and Social Responsibility. In 1996 he came to this Diocese as a Residentiary Canon at Ely Cathedral, with responsibility for education and mission. He became Vice Dean in 1999 and has been Acting Dean for the past six months. John is married to Denise, who is a writer, and they have one young daughter, Eleanor.
For those who would like the opportunity to greet Bishop John and pray with him at the start of his new ministry, a series of welcome services will be held around the Diocese later in the Autumn. They will be on Sunday 23rd November at 3.30 pm at Huntingdon Performing Arts Centre; Sunday 30th November at 3.30 pm at Great St Mary’s Cambridge; and Sunday 7th December at 3.30 pm at St Peter and St Paul, Wisbech. Some of us from the parishes of Duxford, Hinxton and Ickleton will no doubt be attending the service at Great St Mary’s, so if anyone would like a lift or someone to go with, please let me know.
With God’s
blessing. Jane Charman: gentianblue@ntlworld.com
This year we timed our Church Gift Day to coincide
with the Harvest Festival Service and Supper. Many, many thanks to all those
who have given so generously. Our current total is £855. Our beautiful, ancient
church needs a great deal of loving care and attention and these contributions
will help to ensure that it is here for future generations. It's not too late
to make a contribution, should you wish. Jenny Pell and Sebastian Payne,
Churchwardens

Promises are coming in thick and fast and we’ve had
some wonderful items offered. Thank you to everyone who has contributed - your
generosity is much appreciated.
By the time you read this you should all have
received a reminder invitation, together with a list of the promises received
so far. I think you’ll agree that there are some really tempting offers among
them.
Guy Schooling, of Sworders, who used to live in the
village and is on our church electoral roll, has very kindly offered to be our
auctioneer for the evening and this will certainly add some spice to the
occasion!
Just to recap. The auction will be held at Abbey
Farm, Duxford Road,. The auction itself will start at 8.00 pm but the doors
will open at 7.30 pm.
There will be FREE wine, cheese and pâte and, as well
as raising some money for the church, we hope that it will be a happy,
enjoyable and convivial evening for everyone.
Successful bidders should liaise with the donors and
arrange to take up the promise at any mutually convenient time, so long as it
is within a year i.e. before 8th November 2004.
If you would like to bid for an item but cannot be at
the auction, let me (Rosemary) know and I will arrange to put in a proxy bid on
your behalf.
We’ve had several requests for a few hours help in
the house or the garden, so if you felt you could offer this, I’m sure it would
be snapped up. Don’t forget - IT’S NOT
TOO LATE TO PUT IN AN OFFER NOW!
It would be helpful to have any goods delivered before
the day or to Jenny Duke (Thank you all for your support. We look forward to
seeing you on November 8th.
Rosemary Hayes Jenny Duke
Saturday 15th November ‘Children in Need’
The next quiz night will be held on the above date
and all proceeds from the evening will be donated to the ‘Children in Need’
appeal.
Previously this event has proved to be a very popular
and successful evening. We hope this
year will be at least as good.
The quiz starts at 9.00 p.m. and there will be a
raffle and free buffet.
Friday 21st November
The mystery darts competition will be held at 8.30
p.m. on the 21st November not 22nd as advertised in last
month’s Bulletin. Players of all skill levels will have a good chance of
winning, so please come along and try your luck.
Also on the 21st there will be a sponsored
‘hair cut’ when Martyn (Sampson) Wright, will be having his hair, beard and
moustache completely shaved off by Sue (Delila) Bradford. Martyn has already been sponsored for over
£150 and you can either pop in the club any evening and make a pledge, or come
along on the 21st to see what you get for your money.
All proceeds from the above will be donated to MAGPAS
and Children in Need. Again there will
be a raffle and free buffet. The Ickleton Social
Club
I would like to thank all relatives, friends and
neighbours for the lovely cards and flowers sent to me whilst I was in Papworth
Hospital and later Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
They were very much appreciated. Thanks also for the
kind lifts offered to Roy.
Mrs.
Eileen Flitton
Thank you to all who helped to make our Golden
Wedding Anniversary such a special pleasure, by sending congratulations, cards,
flowers and gifts (despite wishes expressed to the contrary).
Thank you to all those who were there for us on the
day, and who had been there in the past to share our ‘ups and downs’.
Many thanks too, to those who helped with the organisation
and clearing up in the village hall.
We have spent 72% of our married life in Ickleton and
we could not have found a better place to settle in.

Our display of photographs at the Over 60s Club on
Wednesday October 8th was very successful. Many previously
unrecognised faces were identified by members, with helpful encouragement and
discussion generated by David Lilley.
We were pleased to meet David and Molly Dagley there and have been able
to copy some of Molly’s photographs to add to the collection. Many thanks to all who participated and made
a great contribution to recording village history.

WHAT ARE YOUR PRIORITIES FOR SOUTH CAMBS? HOW SHOULD WE IMPROVE OUR SERVICES?
South Cambridgeshire District Council would like the
views of all residents on our priorities for improving services in the year
beginning 1st April 2004. We
would also like your views on our future plans for spending and Council Tax.
These are some of the areas where we think it is
important to improve services.
1. More
affordable housing.
2. Helping
village communities define and address their needs.
3. Improving
the cleanliness and tidiness of villages and verges.
4. Planning the new town of Northstowe (at Oakington/Longstanton)
and other major developments around Cambridge.
5. Improving efficiency and the service we provide to people
contacting the Council.
6. Improved communications with the public.
What do you think?
We set priorities to ensure
your money is spent where it is most needed and where it will benefit
many South Cambs residents.
We need your help to identify these areas. We will be holding consultation meetings at the
following locations (all ast 7.15 p.m.):-
Comberton Village College -11th November, Sawston Village College -18th November,
Cottenham Village College - 24th
November, Bassingbourn Village College
- 26th November. The meetings will be informal and friendly, with
light refreshments. Information will be
provided and there will be opportunities to discuss priorities, and the Council’s
spending options, with Councillors, officers and other participants. If you
would like to attend one of the consultation meetings, it would help us if you
could contact Kirsty Simmons ' 01223 443297 or kirsty.simmons@scambs.gov.uk However, if you cannot contact us
beforehand, please feel free just to turn up!
Ickleton and Hinxton Conservatives are holding a
supper party on Friday 28th November at 8.00 p.m. at South Lodge, Frogge Street. Everybody
welcome. Tickets price £6, to cover
drinks and supper, from Mrs. Frankau.
Thank you to everyone who supported my bike ride to
raise money for our friend Jo Swindell.
As you have probably read in the Cambridge Evening News and seen on
Anglia T.V. after a very brave and long battle against cancer, Jo died on
Sunday 21st September, the day after her beautiful and very moving
wedding at the Arthur Rank Hospice.
I had ridden about 60km when I got a call to get straight
to the Hospice as Jo was very poorly the wedding was going ahead a week ahead
of schedule. I was supposed to be
making her bouquet, and the flowers were still on order, but I needn’t have
worried as the wonderful staff at the hospice arranged everything in a few hours.
In the middle of Cambridge amidst the traffic and busy lives of everyone
there was this quiet, calm, beautiful oasis, in the courtyard the waterfall was
filled with gold stars and moons with white lilies, and candles all
around. Jo was wheeled in on her bed,
headdress laid on her, looking like a china doll. I held my breath while we waited for her to get the strength to
say “I do.” I felt privileged to have been on that journey with Jo and to
attend her wedding. It was her only goal
to be well enough to marry Kiran and with the help of the staff she got her
wish.
I want to finish my bike ride, so some of us are
going to do the 80 km all over again in tribute to Jo and to raise as much
money as possible for that wonderful and special place called the Arthur Rank
Hospice – so my sponsor form will be back up in the village shop. Lets get as
much money as possible to them - so
many people will benefit. Anne-Marie Hoare

Following the success of the Flower Show, there was a
good attendance on Wednesday October 1st to hear Mr. Jim Pearce.
Mr. Pearce is a fountain of knowledge relating to
anything horticultural. We learnt how
to plant new trees; the type of tree
suitable for certain conditions; and the type of shrubs and plants for growing
under and around trees. Also he briefly
touched on water gardens, and shrubs and plants most suitable for boggy
conditions.
Next month – Mr. Tony Sanderson will give a talk on
‘Growing and Showing Vegetables’.
Visitors welcome. Cynthia Rule
Very many thanks to everyone, especially the Carpet
Bowls group, who supported The Big Brew Up.
We were able to send £91 to SSAFA to support former
and serving service men and their dependents.
We also sold £50 worth of raffle tickets for the annual draw, in
addition to making the charity a little better known locally. Sheila Birch
Many Ickleton
children attend Duxford Playgroup which has strong links with the school and is
held in the Portacabin in the school grounds. The Portacabin is nearing the end of
its useful life, and we are campaigning to replace it with a new, purpose-built
building to meet the increasing demand for high quality nursery provision in
Duxford and the surrounding villages.
The Family Disco will be the first of many
fundraising events planned for the coming year. There will be dancing,
refreshments, a bar, tombola, etc. etc.
A great way to kick off the festive season. Tickets are available from
Rose Cousins, Sarah Cahill or Louise Stokley.
We would love to hear from anyone, particularly from
local businesses, who would like to get involved in this exciting project and
can make a contribution of some kind.
Call Rose or Sarah if you can help.
Thank you.
WELCOME
TO…....Mrs. Christina
(Tina) Gordon
Once again, there will be a door-to-door collection in the village for the Annual Poppy Appeal.
This has always been very well supported and with
recent world events the need to help our ex-servicemen and women becomes even
greater.
Please be generous when your local collector calls on
you. Malcolm Hall
Having left hospital now and being well on my way to
recovery, I would like to thank everybody who came to see me and sent flowers and cards. A special thank you to Jocelyn, and to
Sandra and Tony - thank you for making things go much easier for me, when you
have your own troubles to contend with.
And Bill! Thanks Bill, what would I do without you? Molly East
THE
CHESTERFORDS, ICKLETON & HINXTON W.I.
Approximately forty members attended ‘Members Night’
on October 15th.
The Rev. David Reindorp proved a most entertaining speaker, describing how he started life working at Lloyds but found that he was not suited to life in the city, so eventually decided to follow in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps and enter the ministry. He is at present Vicar at St. John’s Church in Hills Road, Cambridge.
Members enjoyed a buffet supper with Lambrini, tea
and coffee.
The speaker at the November meeting will be Mike Petty, who will talk on ‘Sherlock Holmes in Cambridge’. Visitors Welcome.

Having been on holiday I have not kept up with events.
However on my return, a number of e.mails from our Police Community Contact
Officer were awaiting me giving an update on recent incidents. These were as follows:
13th September – Church Street – Persons digging on land
causing damage to crops. Three males
were seen with metal detectors which is an ongoing problem in the area.
20th September – Grange Road – Two CCTV camera domes
were damaged by pellets.
Date Unknown – Coploe Road – Stack lights were removed from the
top of a vehicle.
An incident of suspected road rage occurred in
Butchers Hill/Abbey Street. The
description of the offender is white male, aged 27 years, 5’8”, medium build,
black hair shaved, goatee beard and wearing a dark top. If you have any information concerning this
crime please ring 01223 358966 and quote crime no. 067357.
Owners of caravans, trailers and 4x4 vehicles are advised that there has been a spate of thefts of these vehicles in the area and precautions should be taken.
Registration of suspicious vehicles around the area –
the complete number cannot be given as they are only THOUGHT to be suspicious –
White Vauxhall
K839?, Green Land Rover Discovery N857PN?, Grey Isuzu Trooper K521YE?
If you see any of these vehicles (or think it is one
of these vehicles) or if you see anyone acting suspiciously call 01223 358966.
FINALLY – SECURE YOUR VEHICLES Tony Court
The 1968 film ‘The Battle of Britain’ was one of the
films commemorated at Duxford’s Autumn Air Show on Sunday 12th
October.
The film, which has recently been re-released on DVD,
was made at Duxford in 1968 and featured a stellar cast including Michael
Caine, Laurence Olivier, Edward Fox, Susannah York, Ian McShane, Trevor Howard
and Kenneth More. During filming, one
of Duxford’s First World War Belfast hangers was spectacularly destroyed when
the airfield came under attack in a dramatic sequence in the film. The main theme for the Autumn Air Show was Lights,
Camera, Action and featured aircraft
which have appeared in films and TV dramas.
One of those aviation stars was Spitfire MH 434 which appeared in The
Battle of Britain amongst her many film credits.
MH 434 is perhaps the most famous of all Spitfires
still flying today. Built at Vickers,
Castle Bromwich in 1943 and air tested by legendary test pilot Alex Henshaw, MH
434 was initially assigned to No. 222 Squadron and flown in combat by South
African pilot Flt Lt Henry Lardner
Bruke DFC (1916 – 1970) who was credited with seven and a half aerial
victories. In all, the aircraft flew 79
operational sorties during the Second World War before being retired in 1945.
As this was the last major UK air show of the year,
air show favourites like the Jaguar, which is celebrating 30 years in RAF
service this year and also had a brief starring role in the film ’Local Hero’,
were also on display. Tracey Woods ' 01223 499320
