Wellcome Trust work continues fast. The new entrance should be completed in March. Planting of trees and shrubs on all
perimeters continues. Considerable
planting has already been done on the wetlands site and more work is to
follow. This is an area that could be
of great interest to Ickleton, with its new lake and landscaping being so close
to us, just beyond the end of Mill Lane, although the new foothpath across this
area will not be open for use for a couple of months yet.
The WellcomeTrust are also about to construct a cycle
path from North End Road, Hinxton to the Sawston roundabout, and beyond to the
Sawston slip road. At the same time
improvements will be made to the Sawston roundabout.
You may not realise that the big sloping roof of the
new research building, at present under construction, is to have a ‘green’
roof. Waterproofing and insulation is
applied first and a granular fill and planting will follow in the spring. This will mean that viewed from Ickleton
(Brookhampton Street) it should look very pleasing.
Footpaths The Parish Council has been a member of
the County Council Parish Paths Partnership Scheme for about ten years
now. This means that with their help we
have been able to improve the footpath network in our parish by installing
kissing gates, way marking correctly and ensuring that all our paths are
accessible. Regular maintenance work is
carried out by the Parish Council and if anyone has any ideas for further
improvements, please let us know. The
path between Abbey Street and Back Lane is currently receiving attention.
Master Composter Programme The organic organisation HDRA is working
with District and County Councils to promote composting and recruit volunteer
trainers. If you are interested in
becoming a ‘Master Composter’ I have the details available. Training takes place in Cambridgeshire
during March. Alternatively contact
HDRA Consultants, Ryton Organic Gardens, Coventry, CN8 3LG, email: pholmes@hdra.org.uk or phone 024 7630 8202.
Dates of future
meetings In May there will
be two meetings. Thursday 13th May will be the ordinary Parish
Council meeting combined with the AGM, and on Wednesday 19th May the
Annual Parish Meeting will be held, at which reports are given, followed by an
open session for members of the public. Jackie
Casement - Parish Clerk
There will be a revision of the Church Electoral Roll
towards the end of March.
The Roll will be displayed in the Church porch for
two weeks so that it can be checked.
Anyone wishing to make any alteration, or to add
themselves to the Roll should get in touch with me.

FROM A MEMBER OF THE MINISTRY TEAM
Last month Tricia Newland wrote
about the Christian journey during the forty days of Lent. The word 'Lent' comes from the Anglo-Saxon word
'lengten', which was the word used for the spring season because the days
started 'lengthening'. In some parts of
the world the process of inner sorting out, in this time of fasting, prayer and
almsgiving, is physically linked with the process of spring cleaning. Lent is a journey of discovery, as we study,
reflect and pray. The churches in the
five villages - Duxford, Hinxton, Ickleton, Pampisford and Whittlesford - have
arranged the customary Lent activities, to be held in each village in
turn. On Tuesdays at 2.00 pm. we are
using a Lent study course, which has been produced by the Churches Together in
Britain and Ireland. Its title is 'Face
to Face - Growing into the image and likeness of God'. On Wednesdays at 8.00pm. there is a short
service of worship, prayer and reflection in the parish churches. Full details of the Lent programme are
available from the churches and can be seen
on posters displayed
locally. We invite you to join us for
some, if not all, of these times together.
At 12.30 pm. on Thursdays, at Duxford URC, there will be a simple lunch,
followed by a brief meditation - a pleasant time of shared fellowship. Again, everyone is welcome!
So, what about the fasting and
almsgiving? Fasting is not so much a
matter of 'giving things up for Lent' as of looking into our inner selves to
see what areas need to be cut down so that new growth can take place.
Here are some suggestions for
fasting and giving which focus on the renewal of the inner person. As they do not involve food and drink, they
are ideal for people who lead busy and demanding lives – i.e. most of us!
Suggestions for giving:
live the virtues you most need - live humbly, patiently, kindly
etc.;
make someone else happy, by a visit, a phone call, an e-mail or
a letter;
be prepared to take really well the things which rub you up the
wrong way;
be truly joyful and thankful.
Suggestions for fasting: avoid - critical or unkind thoughts of others; harbouring anything to
grumble about, to resent or to make you touchy; expressing temper or
irritation; gloomy and morbid thoughts; selfish thoughts. Perhaps you can think of other suggestions
.....
May God bless us on our Lenten journey. Julie
Baillie

We hope you will all come to this annual event on
July 3rd.
We have the usual grand pet show (no cats please as
they get too frightened), Dick
Wombwell’s Vintage Tractors and Vehicles, and an Art Exhibition, by local
artist Caroline Merrifield. We also
have the Ickleton Society Archives, the Saffron Walden Town Band, a fancy dress
parade for children and adults and the usual stalls and much more.
Now is the time to turn out your cupboards for the
bric-a-brac. We hope we can collect the following: cds, tapes and records,
books, adult and children’s jigsaws, nearly new clothes etc.
As mentioned in last months Icene, the Ickleton Village School re-union will take
place.
It has been suggested we have a photography
competition this year, so I am looking into that possibility, so get clicking
with those new digital cameras….. more details next month.
The Ickleton Social Club have kindly agreed to
organise a quiz especially for the fete.
If you have any ideas about the fete, please let me
know.
If you would like a pitch, which will be on the
recreation ground only and I am afraid you will have to make your own
arrangements if wet, as the hall will be full please bring your own table. For
more details on this please contact me, Monica Lilley. The cost will be £5 per pitch, and 20% of
what you sell, to the Churchwardens Sebastian Payne or Jenny Pell.
If you would like to help in any way, have any ideas
for the fete, or need any more information, please contact Sebastian Payne,
Jenny Pell or myself Monica Lilley. We look forward to hearing from you.
My sister and I will be holding a Jumble Sale in the
Village Hall on Saturday 6th March at 2.30pm in aid of Ward C2
(children’s cancer ward) at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
We know a young girl who spent six months in this
ward and is now in remission. Sadly, some of the children in there at the same
time didn’t make it.
We will be most grateful for offers of help on the
day, also for donations of jumble, bric-a-brac, books, cakes and produce, toys
etc. and raffle prizes.
If you can help in any way please phone Carol, or
bring your donations along to the village hall on the morning of 6th
March. Thank you. Carol Turton & Rosemarie Tennick
The Ickleton Theatre Group presented Tina May and
Nikki Iles on Wednesday 4th February, preceded by an excellent
chilli con carne supper.
The music played was not trad(itional) jazz but more
contemporary.
Tina May was indeed a good vocalist and her
improvisions were pleasant and colourful, whilst Nikki Iles gave a wonderful
performance as a jazz pianist. They were a good team.
All in all a very social evening, well organised and
well attended, even by some outsiders, i.e. followers of jazz.
Evenings like this one are sheer hard work and the
Theatre Group is to be congratulated on putting on such a show.

JAZZ IN ICKLETON
We wined and dined in
exceptional village hall style, but by the time we left we thought we had been
to Ronnie Scott's.
Tina May and Nikki Iles bowled
us over with a fine selection from their repertoire, which gave every
opportunity for us to enjoy Tina’s remarkable vocal range and Nikki’s seemingly
effortless accompaniment. We're hooked!
Thank you to everyone. Barry Williams and Sandra Tatum
THURSFORD CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR

We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who
came to see our Christmas Lights, and gave towards our chosen charity. We sent
£75 to the Children’s Cancer Ward at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. We have received a
very nice thank you card and receipt from the ward manager.
Thanks everyone. Carol & Barry Turton

DUXFORD
SCHOOL SWIMMING POOL
Many families will have happy
memories of using the Duxford swimming pool during the summertime This much
valued community facility is approximately 30 years old. It has served the
children and families of the school well, both in term times and during the
summer holidays. Without the enormous commitment of the Swimming Pool Club it
would not have lasted so long.
Following a site visit, it has become
apparent that, for Health & Safety reasons, the pool cannot be used this
summer without significant improvements. Apart from replacing the pool, the
condition of the plant room needs to be considered and the installation of a
new more efficient boiler. All work must of course comply with new Health &
Safety legislation.
Estimated costs for the
swimming pool refurbishment are £80,000. This is clearly beyond the School's
budget.
The Governors feel strongly
that this pool is an asset to the school and the community. We must find a way
of working together with the local community to ensure that sufficient funds
can be raised to re-open a new pool for the summer of 2005. S. J. Dorrington -
Headteacher
Our first meeting of 2004 got off to a good start,
despite attendance being down slightly due to the weather.
Our speaker Mr. Paul Heavens described the history of
Auriculas, which were first cultivated in Austria in the 17th century
before spreading to the rest of Europe and becoming a great favourite of the
Victorians. They also featured a great deal in Dutch and Flemish portraiture.
We were shown lots of different varieties filmed by Paul, inspiring us to have
a go at growing them.
On 26th May we will be celebrating our 30th
birthday. Tickets £10 – members only. More details later.
The next meeting on 3rd March will be the
Spring Quiz, when once again our knowledge will be well and truly tested. Cynthia Rule

NEWS
FROM SAWSTON MEDICAL PRACTICE
From 1st March we are planning
to change our appointment system and we hope that this will improve the service
we offer our patients. Below is an explanation of what this change will mean
for us all.
Why are we changing the system?
Although our current ‘duty
doctor’ system generally allows our patients to be seen on the day they wish to
be seen, it does not give a bookable appointment time, nor may it give access
to the most appropriate doctor or nurse applicable to the patient's problem.
Our reception staff are often
unable to offer appointments convenient to both our patients and the medical
staff - a ‘no win’ situation for us all and it can result in patients waiting a
long time to be seen.
When will it change?
Our new system will be
introduced on 1st March when follow-up appointments can be booked after 1st
March by phoning on the day they are required.
How will the system change?
From 1st March there will be no
duty doctor system. Except for genuine medical emergencies, all patients
wishing to see a doctor or our nurse practitioner will be seen by appointment. To
book, you should telephone on the morning of the day on which you wish to be
seen. Our aim will be to provide same day appointments with the most
appropriate doctor, nurse or other health professional.
What will not change?
All our special clinics, for example
diabetes, hypertension, asthma, cervical smear, family planning etc will still
be bookable in advance.
What will this mean to us all?
We are intending to reduce your
waiting time on arrival at the surgery. Our aim is for patients to have access
to an appropriate health professional when required and not to have to wait for
a suitable appointment. Our reception staff will be able to offer our patients
a convenient appointment and have more time to help and assist with patients'
queries.
A leaflet explaining the new
system can be obtained from reception

Bridge on a Monday afternoon continues with dedicated
followers, so much so that a second group will now be started on a Tuesday afternoon for the more experienced. We have already had a second group going in
which we use the meeting room for advanced players; but as we have a waiting
list for both groups it was decided to try a new group in the village hall on a
Tuesday afternoon. Hence we can expand
this ever popular U3A Bridge Group.
Please contact Gordon Budd or Mike Brown for more
information. You will be made most welcome if you decide to join us.
For the past 8 years or so we have enjoyed a ‘cuppa’
at half time made by Cynthia Rule, but now she feels it’s time to give up. Cynthia has been making at least 40 cups of
tea every Monday afternoon for the past eight years and we are very grateful to
her. Thank you Cynthia from us all, it
was much appreciated. Gordon
Budd
Is there anybody perhaps a retired
person, who has time on their hands to make tea for us around 2.45 p.m. every
Monday afternoon. We are prepared to
pay £2 a session for this. Please contact Gordon Budd or Monica Lilley.
We are sorry to record the death of Geraldine Booth,
mother of James and Richard, who died at Harlow, after just a few months’
illness, on 16th December.

It's probably a sign of the
times and an indication of how modern technology has eased the major household
chores that the tradition of spring-cleaning has largely disappeared. Having
said that, we should all take the time to set aside five minutes to carry out
an annual 'spring clean' on one of the most important appliances in our homes -
the smoke alarm.
In addition to the weekly battery
check, once a year you should replace the batteries. You should also, as part
of a six monthly routine, clean the inside of the smoke alarm to remove any
dust or midges. Open the alarm or remove the cover and clean by using a soft
brush or better still the gentle application of the vacuum cleaner nozzle, to
ensure that any foreign bodies that could affect the alarms operation are
removed.
• Check Alarm Function Weekly
• Clean Alarm Six Monthly
• Replace Batteries Annually
Sadly, the Fire Service is
still attending fires in domestic property where it is likely that a working
smoke alarm would have given an early warning. Even more worrying is that, in
some cases, although a smoke alarm had been fitted, it failed to operate
because the batteries had been removed.
• Only remove the battery on replacement
• Never remove it to use elsewhere
• A WORKING SMOKE ALARM COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE
For any advice on the
installation of smoke alarms or any fire safety matters, please contact me, your
Community Fire Safety Officer Tony Hibberd, Parkside Fire Station, Cambridge
01223 376252 or 07775 670764 or tony.hibberd@cambsflre.gov.uk
THE CHESTERFORDS, ICKLETON AND HINXTON W.I.
Mr Bendall our speaker for the February meeting surely missed his vocation! He should have been a comedian. We were rolling off our seats with laughter at his anecdotes and stories of his life as a gamekeeper. No wonder we had to wait over a year to book him, he must be very sought after and can be recommended as an entertaining speaker!
Dinah Millson gave the vote of thanks including a
very appropriate little poem written by husband Bob which caused more laughter
(thank you Bob).
The next meeting on March 17th will be the
A.G.M. followed by a plate supper.
Many thanks to everybody who came to see me and sent
me cards, flowers, presents and good wishes following my recent knee operation.
Everything seems to be going well and I am nearly walking properly again.
Thank you to David for typing most of this Bulletin
(with one high speed finger!).
