Wetlands Are you
interested in wildlife and local habitats?
As part of the South Field Project on the Genome Campus, a new wetland
area is being established beside the river near Ickleton. The footpath crossing this area will be open
to residents of Ickleton, Hinxton and those working on the Genome Campus
sometime in 2005. The Wellcome Trust is
keen to involve local residents in the ongoing management of the area and is
approaching both Hinxton and Ickleton Parish Councils with a proposal to form a
conservation group, including local residents, under the guidance of The
Cambridge Wildlife Trust. If you are
interested in getting involved in this local nature project, please contact
Sheila Birch or the Clerk, Jackie Casement.
Parking
in Abbey Street We are experiencing difficulties with
increased parking in Abbey Street, particularly while building work is in
progress. Please park sensibly, bearing
in mind visibility and allowing enough space for larger vehicles, such as the
school bus, to get through. Please use
off-street parking if you can.
Dog
fouling We have had many complaints about
dog fouling on the Recreation Field.
Please act responsibly and go out equipped with plastic bags when you
exercise your dogs. The dog warden pays
us random visits and the maximum fine for being caught failing to clear up is
£1,000.00.
Security
There have been a number of
incidents reported recently, so please be aware of house security and keep an
eye out for anything suspicious.

Casement - Parish Council Clerk
The Sawston Medical Practice will allow patients who
have to use the Car Service to book appointments a few days ahead.
Unfortunately we are short of drivers and must regretfully
emphasise that we can only help those who cannot get to the surgery ‘under
their own steam’. We are in need of
more drivers. We work under the
auspices of the Cambridge Care Network and if you would like to know more,
please contact me.
Please can you help by becoming a volunteer
driver? Peggy Richardson

Look how
Jesus lived. Born in an obscure
village, a peasant woman’s son, living in a working class home for thirty
years. Wandered about teaching and
preaching for three years, never travelling far from where He was born.
Look how
He died. An apparent failure, disowned
and deserted by friends and foe alike.
Betrayed for about £4. His
mother’s heart broken. A more ignominious
death could hardly be imagined.
So would our Christian exist if Christ’s suffering had come to nothing? If He was just another unfortunate who met a violent death in a cruel world – so what? If just another, who lost the hopeless fight against death – why bother about Him?
But the
Christian belief, based upon unshakeable evidence, is that Christ rose from the
dead and that He lives evermore. ‘Jesus
Christ is risen today’ is the paean that reverberates around the world on Easter
Day.
Never
forget. The Resurrection is not an
appendage, a fag end, to the Christian Faith.
It is not just a ‘happy ending’ story.
Jesus and the Resurrection IS the Christian Faith. All the evidence of the New Testament shows
that the core of the Good News that spread around the world was not just any
religion will do – try not to harm your neighbour – do the best you can, and
the rest of the populist ethics. Not at
all. The core of the Gospel message
was, is and always will be, JESUS AND THE RESURRECTION. Subtract that, and you eviscerate,
disembowel Christianity.
So, you
have to accept or reject HIM. With me
or against me, He asks? No fences to
sit on here. Do you, accept Him? You who watched a loved one die, slowly and
painfully. You, whose child was
‘wave-dodging’ and lost her footing.
You, whose brother succumbed to ‘crack’ cocaine? Where are they now? What happens after death? Everyone wants to know. Only Jesus Christ can give the answer. Because you accept Him as Lord of this world
and the world hereafter, you trust Him.
He says, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with us in Paradise.’ You know your loved ones are safe, and that
one day you will be reunited. ‘Nothing
can my power withstand.’ That is what
Easter Day says to you.
You and I
are just ordinary folk trying to live the Christian life. We know well enough of sin and
suffering. We know when we pray, make
an act of real penitence, resist temptation to what we pretend are little sins,
turn our backs to the temptations no one knows about except God and ourselves;
then because of Easter Day, we and countless Christians share a victor, which
death itself cannot defeat. Why? Jesus and the Resurrection Charles

The Fete this year will be held on July 3rd
on the recreation ground and in Ickleton Village Hall from 2.00 p.m. until 5.00
p.m. This annual family event has been running a few years now. Newcomers to the village will be made very
welcome.
The Parochial Church Council is ever grateful to the
village for supporting this event, as it is one of our fundraising events and a
social event as well.
Last year our annual fete was very generously sponsored by local firms
and services, to the tune of £350. This money was a great help to us in
defraying expenses such as hiring the brass band and placing newspaper
advertisements.
I am now writing to ask firms (or individuals) to sponsor us this year.
The fete will be held on July 3rd and a week before this date a leaflet
will be delivered to every household in the village to advertise the programme
of events. The names of sponsors, and their details, will be printed on the
back.
The cost of sponsorship is £25 and I already have several firms
interested. So, if you would like to sponsor the fete, or if you can suggest
any firms or services who might like to do so, or if you would like more
information, please contact me, Monica Lilley or one of the Churchwardens,
Sebastian Payne or Jenny Pell.
Please make cheques payable to Ickleton PCC and deliver them to me at 8
Brookhampton Street, Ickleton.
** Deadline for payment and sponsorship details is 31st May 2004 **
The Parochial Church Council is very grateful for your help.Thank you,
in advance.
If you would like a pitch for a stall at the fete, the
cost will be £5 and 20% of what you sell at the fete. Please make your own arrangements if wet (as the hall will be
full) and please bring your own table.
Make a cheque out to Ickleton Parochial Church
Council, with your name and address and telephone number and put it through my
door before the fete.

ICKLETON NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
A quiet year so far, but the
police have recently advised me of a type of burglary which they are striving
to prevent. In Granchester, an elderly woman was woken up by a knock on the
door and greeted by a man with a holdall. He led the woman to believe that she
had ordered some items
from him - which she had not -
and entered the house without being invited. He put the items on the table and
helped himself to cash from her purse - well in excess of the amount the items
would cost (pegs, tea towels etc.) He left and a short time later another man
came to the door and asked for biscuits. Because she was embarassed at being
'caught' she didn't tell anyone until the next day. As it happened, the
salesman left his ID card in her purse, and he has been traced by the police.
It was an official ID – ‘Work Creation’ for self- employed people earning money
by door-to-door selling of household goods. He is now in custody and was
already wanted by another police force for the same type of crime. Elderly
people, especially, should put a chain on their door before answering. A good
simple message to learn is - IF IN DOUBT - LOCK THEM OUT – and phone 999.
E-mail Scams Just
remember - Nothing is Free. Banks do not contact you directly concerning your
bank account via e-mail - so do not e-mail money into requested accounts
without checking with the bank first and do not pass on your bank or building
society details.
Mobile Phone Scam There
is currently a scam whereby you receive a message saying 'Missed Call' showing
the number 0709 020 3840. (The last four numbers may be different but the first
four are always 0709) If you call this number back you will be charged £50 per
minute. It is no good complaining about your phone bill - as this apparently is
completely legal.
Any suspicions or information
call the Police on ' 01223

JUMBLE SALE
My sister and I would like to say thank you to everyone
who gave us jumble, cakes, raffle prizes etc. Also a big thank you to all our
helpers, without them we wouldn’t have been able to raise so much money. We
raised £627.80p plus £190 that my daughter Mrs. Nina Douglas had raised from a
previous fund raising, a total of £817.80p.
And of course a thank you to all the people who came
to buy on the day.
A cheque for £817.80p will be sent to The Children’s
Cancer Ward at Addenbrooke’s.

The now 5th Annual Parkinson’s Bazaar will
be held in Ickleton Village Hall on May 8th at 2.00 p.m. I would
like to ask for contributions towards this sale, almost anything will sell, so
please, when doing that spring clean, save it for us. We hope to have the usual stalls, teas and a good draw. Please help in any way you can. Can I ask all those friends who have helped
before in any way, serving sorting or whatever, for their help again this year
- without them there would not be a sale.
Items can be left with Mary Woolhouse, Cynthia Rule
or myself Dorothy Churchman or I will be pleased to collect.
Thank you all in anticipation of your kind help and a
good day. Dorothy

please telephone Shelia Birch on.
The total amount donated in Keith’s memory for the
East Anglian Children’s Hospice was £480.30. Thank you to everyone who gave a
donation. Kathy,

How delighted I was to watch some young lads practising cricket on the recreation ground - and in February too. Could such enthusiasm be the start of an Ickleton Cricket Team? I wish……….
Cynthia Rule
Forty three members attended the Spring Quiz Evening,
another record attendance! Ickleton members once more excelled themselves, the
‘Camelot’ team being the outright winners.
I’ll leave you to guess who they were?
Pauline Gale, Vice Chairman, thanked Keith and Joan
Sutcliffe for hosting their ‘Snowdrop Afternoon’
on February 12th, which was very successful.
Next month April 7th will be our A.G.M.,
when we hold a good plant stall and
hope to encourage new members to join. Subscriptions will be £7 and £6
concessions. Now is the time to join to take advantage of the New Year’s
programme. Cynthia Rule
We are sorry to record the death of Mrs. Gladys
Roberts, aged 83, of Great Chesterford.
The funeral took place on 19th March at
Great Chesterford Church. Mrs. Roberts
was a very regular Ickleton Churchgoer
for over 50 years.
I am pleased to announce that Duxford Post Office is
now able to do Vehicle Licensing (Tax Discs). Brian Woodhams
THE
CHESTERFORDS, ICKLETON & HINXTON W.I.
Our A.G.M. was held on March 17th when
over 30 members attended. Could it have been the excellent plate supper that
attracted so many?
The treasurer reported that our funds were £30 up on last year – good.
Our Secretary’s reports reminded us of all the
interesting speakers and outings we’ve had, also the Silk Painting Class which was
a great success and will be repeated again some time this coming year. Carol
Dean, our President, will carry on for another year, with the help of two new
committee members. Carol thanked her
Committee and everyone who had worked to make the year a success. At the end of
the evening, Mary Wombwell gave a warm vote of thanks to Carol and her
Committee on behalf of the members.
The next meeting will be on April 21st
7.45 p.m. at Great Chesterford Community Centre, when the subject will be
’Anything to Declare’ Security at Stansted Airport.

There will be a ‘Art for All’ sale of art, to include needlework, in aid
of Hinxton Church, on Easter Monday, 12th April from 10.00 a.m. -
2.00 p.m. in Hinxton Church.

WELCOME
TO…….Neil and Rosemary
McKillen and daughter Tori.
Just when we were about to finalize the April issue,
before taking it to our proof readers, there was a gust of wind and the lights
went out, and remained out all afternoon and evening. An all too regular
occurance.
We are so dependent on electricity these days.
Perhaps someone should bring out a wind-up word processor, a clockwork computer
or a paraffin PC. The trains were still running, so we thought about hooking a
wire over the catenary, but perhaps 25,000 volts would be a bit strong for the
40 watt bulbs in our house!
