12th December 2005
As another Christmas comes round we would like to thank
our proof readers and Tony Court, Hilary Rule and their delivery team, for all
their work.
May we remind everyone that, as we hope to get the
January issue ‘put to bed’ and possibly printed before Christmas, 12th December
really is the absolute deadline.
Happy Christmas to all our readers. David and Monica Lilley

The December meeting of the Parish Council has been
brought forward a week from Wednesday 21st December to Wednesday 14th December
2005.
The Police have informed us that they are carrying
out checks, and are issuing notices (with a view to enforcing it in the near
future) to those vehicles parked on the street facing the wrong way.
We will be registering with the Constabulary’s
‘E-cops’ community e-mail scheme, which is designed to enable information to be
passed more speedily. You can view
recent local up-to-date information by logging onto the police website:
www.cambs.police.uk
We wish Monica Lilley a speedy recovery following her
operation.
The Parish Council would like to wish everyone a
Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year.
Jocelyn Flitton- Parish
Clerk
In the early hours of Saturday morning 29th October a
car was broken into on Back Lane. A
window was smashed and the lock and door damaged. Items such as stereo and speakers were stolen, along with CDs,
Timberland boots and other items.
The police have been informed. Jenny Clements

There are three themes to the Advent season. The
Church looks back to the first coming of Christ in humility and forward to his
second coming in glory. Bernard of Clairvaux added a third dimension. We should
not think only of the past and future, he said, but also turn our minds to the
coming of Christ to us now. In church, the weeks before Christmas are a time of
waiting. Advent, like Lent, includes an element of penitence. The colour of the
season is purple, there are no flowers and the services have a sombre feel
about them. But the primary characteristic is expectation. 'Come, Lord Jesus'
is the Advent prayer of confidence and longing, and it is that feeling that
dominates Advent worship. Because there is confidence, there is a kind of
solemn joy; because there is penitence there is restraint as well. In Advent,
we wait and watch and make ourselves ready for the coming of Christ. Advent
began on 27th November, and the first three Sundays in December are all
‘Sundays in Advent’.
Purists claim that to have Christmas services before
Christmas is to miss the whole point. But the Church must attend to a world
that is taking an interest in one of our stories, and help people prepare to
celebrate the First Coming of the Christchild. We do so by telling the story in
word and song, but always encouraging a sense of developing movement towards
the climax on Christmas Day, so that, as far as possible, everything before
25th December is preparation, getting ready for the day. Our Christmas menu
includes Christingle Services, carolling in the villages, traditional Nine
Lessons and Carols, Midnight Mass and on Christmas morning, Family Services and
Communion Services. Further details will be found in the Churches’ Christmas
card, which will be delivered to the homes of the villages at the beginning of
December.
For 2006, the Anglican Churches of Duxford, Hinxton
and Ickleton are trying out a new service structure, and we hope people will
experiment with it, to see what suits them. It identifies three basic ‘service
types’:

In the new year, a more flexible Baptism policy will come
into operation, offering families a choice between Baptism within the main
Sunday service and a ‘personal’ Baptism service. Once a month, there will be a
‘headline’ Family Service in one of the churches. You’ll find further details
of all the changes in the Churches’ 2006 Calendar.
As our first Christmas in the villages approaches, we
would like to thank everyone for such a warm welcome, for your support for your
village churches and wish you all a peaceful Christmas and a Happy New Year. Andrew Schofield

Will you help to brighten a child’s life this
Christmas? You are invited to come
along to the Toy Gift Service at Duxford Church at 10.00 a.m. on Sunday 11th December and to bring a gift-wrapped item,
suitable for a one to ten year old. It
would be helpful if the gift could bear a label indicating the age and sex of
the recipient. A member of the
Uttlesford Homestart team will receive the gifts and they will be distributed
at their Christmas party.
If you are unable to join us on December 11th,
any of the churchwardens or ministers will be pleased to receive your
gifts. Many thanks. Julie Baillie, Reader
There has been such a demand for the Ickleton
Christmas card – a lovely winter picture of Ickleton Church – that we have had to reprint and now have plenty more
available.
Order forms are in the church, together with a sample
of the card. If you would like to buy any cards, please fill in an order form
and bring it to Durhams Farmhouse, Butcher’s Hill, with the correct money or
with a cheque made out to Ickleton Parochial Church Council.
We can either supply you with the cards right away
or, if we are not at home, we can deliver them to you later.
Cards cost £3.50 for ten, £2.00 for five. All proceeds from the sale of cards will go to church funds. Rosemary Hayes

We are sorry
to record the death of Lucy Quill aged 78 on 20th October.
Lucy had lived in Ickleton for about twenty years and
helped with a number of village events.
Grateful thanks from her daughters for the cards, sympathy
and donations to Sawston Roman Catholic Church, where the funeral service took
place.
‘The Pea the Bean and the Enormous Turnip’, our first
show for children, was a great success.
Some 70 plus children and 30 plus
adults attended and we are planning to stage more such shows. Our next show will be on Saturday 14th
January when we welcome the return of the Sawston Players for another murder
mystery evening. Dilip and Sunita at
Costcutter Express have again kindly offered to act as our booking office, and
tickets will be available around mid December.
Please book early to avoid disappointment and to help the organisers to
plan the catering. Pam Fearn
What a fantastic evening! The event was completely
sold out, with over 60 local children attending.
There were several ‘stalls’ for the children to visit
including jelly slurping, apple bobbing, doughnut on a string, feely boxes,
craft table, face painting, yum-yum-yuck-yuck and the Mummy game.
Mums, Dads and children all dressed up and there were
some brilliant costumes.
Many thanks to everyone who made cakes, manned the
stalls, washed up and gave their time to organise the party.

For the Spring 2006 term, the course will be:
‘Cambridgeshire Local History’, tutor: Mike Petty.
This will take place every Wednesday morning from
18th January 10.00am to 11.30am (including
coffee) at the Congregational Chapel, Carmel Street, Great Chesterford
for 10 weekly sessions.
The course
will offer presentations on aspects of Cambridgeshire history in the
19th and 20th centuries, with information on various resources that can be used
to pursue research.
Mike Petty is an authority on Cambridge and the Fens,
being well known for his talks, books and contributions to Cambridge
newspapers, radio and TV.
For more information or to reserve a place, please
contact Margaret Beston.
Course fees are £33 and free to those on certain
means tested benefits. The first two sessions may be sampled at £3.30 per
session, deductible from the course fee if continuing.
We are sorry that after about 25 years involved with
newspaper delivery Len and Joy Howe have decided to retire. They were a great partnership and it will be
a wrench for them. Have we ever had a paper boy and girl for 25 years before?

Once again we are
decorating our garden for Christmas, we are collecting for The Breast Cancer
Unit at Addenbrooke’s Hospital again this year. Please come and bring the children to have a look.
We hope you all
have a very Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Carol and
Barry Turton
If you are on the roll and would like a free entry
pass to the Cathedral, valid for a year, please sign up on the form which will
be on the central pillar desk in church.
Please write clearly and don’t forget your postcode. I will send off for the passes on the 10th
December.

The November meeting was well attended despite the
weather.
Prof John Parker proved an excellent speaker. With
the help of slides, he related the history and future plans for the Cambridge
Botanic Gardens.
The next meeting will be on December 7th
when Richard Ford from Park Green Nurseries will talk on the subject of
‘Grasses in the Garden’. Cynthia Rule
Thank you to many in the community for your warm
welcome to me as the new head at Duxford C of E Community Primary School My first half term has flown by. As you
would expect it has been extremely busy. But what has made the biggest
impression on me? It must be the people and primarily the children. The
attitude of the children always impressed me when I visited the school last
term, and that has continued this year. They are committed to their work,
polite and always have a ready smile. The same could most definitely be said of
all the staff and governors who work together to create this ethos. I have been
fortunate to meet so many people from the community and look forward to
building more links with Duxford, Hinxton and Ickleton.

CHESTERFORDS, ICKLETON AND HINXTON W.I.
The night of November 16th was bitterly
cold with a sharp frost, but despite this 28 brave members ventured out to hear
the speaker from the Milton Children’s Hospice.
The hospice is funded mainly by contributions and
fund raising, and needs three million pounds per year - this includes the
hospice in Ipswich and a small one in Norfolk.
After the meeting was officially closed, members were able to purchase
Christmas cards and gifts from the stall, which raised £95.
A cheque for £50, from our own fund raising efforts,
was also given to the hospice.
The next meeting will be one week earlier, on
December 14th and starting at 7.30 p.m. There will be the usual £3 gift exchange for those wanting to
take part. Cynthia Rule

I would like to say a very big thank you to everybody
for their kindness, visits, cards and flowers after my recent hip operation
which seems to be successful. Fortunately this took place between Icenes.
Thank you too to David for looking after me; he
needed a crash course in flower arranging!
You certainly know what kindness is when you have had
an operation! Thank you everyone. Monica
