Hanley Grange
Proposal
inc. Joint Action Group:
Terry Sadler reported that Wellcome Trust had put out a
press release today saying that they had withdrawn from the Hanley Grange
proposal. The Parish Council welcomed
this news and would write a letter to Wellcome Trust.
Terry Sadler gave an update on recent meetings and correspondence
to the Councillors. It was also noted
that Jarrow Investments altered their submission on 30th June, which
did not allow anyone to respond, as this was the last day of the consultation.
The Chairman wished to thank everyone who had worked very
hard on this consultation, especially Terry Sadler and Rachel Radford who
worked so hard on behalf of Ickleton.
Proposed Grange
Road closure during August for 5 days.
As this was in the middle of harvest, the Chairman spoke to the Project
Manager, David Ross, to see if the date could be changed to end of
September/October. Mr Ross has verbally
agreed to the change of date but confirmation has not yet been received. A letter from RAGT had been received,
stating the disruption it would cause if the road were closed in August. CCC Streetworks Coordinator had not notified
us of the proposed works, nor the alternative route proposed using Coploe
Road. The Parish Council will write a letter
pointing out the safety issues of using a single-track road and that this is
also a preferred cycle route.
Cemetery Chapel – The
Chairman had had a good look around the chapel and found the eastern side in
very poor condition. Overall the chapel
needs a lot of money spent on it. It
was agreed that the Chairman would contact Mr Warren of George Collin & Son
and obtain an overall estimate. The
Council wondered if any grants were available.
Item to be put on next month’s Agenda.
Police
Neighbourhood Panel Meeting (07/07/08):
Lewis
Duke and Jocelyn Flitton attended this meeting. The new Sector Inspector, Chris Savage, took the meeting;
discussions took place about where the different parishes have problems and how
the police will address them. They also
had the opportunity to speak to PC Iain Perry.
The next meeting is on 6 October 2008 at Sawston Village College at 7.00
p.m. for 7.30 p.m. and members of the public are welcome to attend.

NOTES FROM HINKLEDUX RECTORY
Starting September
If you’re looking for controversy from the vicar over women
bishops or gay clergy, I’m going to disappoint you. I think the job of a
village clergyperson is to draw people together and to offer hope and healing
where there is so often anger and pain. I rather agree with the speaker at a
recent church meeting who said that the starting point for all our discussions
should be the acknowledgement that as human beings we are deeply flawed. Maybe
then we’d start talking gently and honestly instead of shouting banner
headlines at one another.
The decisions people make about church are actually
significant life style choices which affect how you think about yourself, the way
you relate to other people, your personal goals and how you spend your time and
money. Church offers a context in which to work these things out – though, as
you can see from the newspaper headlines, people come to startlingly different
conclusions!
If you want to provide your family
with a context for their personal decisions as they grow up, then you may be
interested in events being put on by your village churches. We believe that
work with families and children should be a priority, and each village church
is exploring a way of responding.
At Duxford, on the fourth Sunday of
every month there is a Family Service at 10.00 a.m. (‘hymns you know - Bible
stories you’ll want to hear again - worship designed with families in mind’) –
more information from Tim Hooper ( 01223 837940. At Hinxton there is a
Family Communion service on the third Sunday of the month at 10.00 a.m., and
we’re looking at other ways of meeting the needs of village families with
alternative worship (these days called ‘Liquid Worship’!) and Family
Celebrations.
At Ickleton we’re trying something completely new - a Sunday
School. There is a view in church circles that Sunday School is dead. Maybe
that’s so if your memory of Sunday School is an opportunity to provide your
parents with a bit of peace and quiet on a Sunday afternoon, in return for an hour at church which earned you an attendance stamp for your
Sunday School book. This is going to be different and fun, and we hope it will
encourage children to want to discover more. It’ll be on the first Sunday of
the month, starting at Church at 10.00 a.m. and then going over to the Social
Club for activities. We’re now in the process of ensuring all the proper
security checks are in place, so that the first session can begin on September
7th. If you’d like to know more, contact Keena McKillen ( 01223 832785.
And finally, we’d like to start an ‘exploring Christianity’
group in the autumn term for young people (and adults?) who may want to find
out more about church membership. We’re planning to use Emmaus group resources
as a way of discovering more about faith and what it means to be confirmed in
the Church of England. More information on that from the vicar.
If in the headlines, church sometimes seems riven by
dispute, that shouldn’t distract us from the tasks to which we are called, as
individuals and communities. To discover the life of faith is to find meaning
and hope and direction when too often the choices with which we are faced seem
empty and pointless.

HISTORIC CHURCHES TRUST
Sponsored Cycle Ride and Stride,
Saturday September 13th
This event raises money for local churches and chapels. You
can nominate one or more of your choice and your sponsorship money is then
earmarked for that place of worship.
If you would like to take part, sponsorship forms are on the
pillar table in church.
We offer refreshments to the participants, so any offers of
nibbles, cakes etc. will be very gratefully received by me!
Also, we like to welcome the visitors to church and, in past
years, many people in the village have given an hour (or more) of their time to
sit in the church porch.
If you can help, please sign up on the sheet on the pillar
table in church, for any time between 10.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. Many thanks.

STOP HANLEY GRANGE CAMPAIGN
At the time of writing, we have had the excellent news that
the Wellcome Trust has decided not to make its 270 acres of land on the Hanley
Grange site available for the eco-town proposal by Jarrow. Jarrow and Tesco are considering their
position, but I hope that, by the time you read this, they will have decided to
withdraw altogether.
If not, our fight will continue to the bitter, end which now
appears to be around the end of the year or even January next year, following
another period of consultation. We’ll
keep up the pressure and are confident that sense will ultimately prevail. If you’re not already receiving e-mail
updates on the campaign and would like to do so, please send me your e-mail address.
In the meantime, the Campaign team would welcome offers of
help from anyone with expertise in law, planning, environmental issues,
transport, PR and media or anything else that could be useful if the fight does
go on. Please get in touch with me or via
the website – www.stophanleygrange.co.uk.

ICKLETON ALLOTMENT UPDATE
The group has made good progress with the allotments. The
plan is to have the first allotment plots ploughed and dug by the end of July.
Just in time for National Allotment week, 11th -17th August 2008.
The group would like to say a big thank you to Lewis Duke
for all the help he has provided.
Anyone interested in joining the association, or who would
like further information, please contact Louise Andrew, loulou1979@hotmail.com or Lisa
Morrissey.
CAMBRIDGE MENCAP
Volunteers needed
Cambridge Mencap
is seeking volunteers to support a child or young person with a learning
disability.
You could support someone to play games, enjoy arts and
crafts, play in the park, go swimming, or just watch a DVD in the young
person’s home. Your support could help the young person develop their social
skills, interests, independence and self confidence, whilst also providing
valuable respite time to parents and carers.
If you could spare a few hours one evening of every month,
then you could be doing something new, or something you already do and enjoy,
whilst making a BIG difference to a young person’s, and a family’s, life.
Interested? Find out more by contacting Robert Wallace,
Volunteers Support Coordinator ( 01223 883140 Email: robert@cambridgemencap.co.uk

ICKLETON CHURCH
FETE 2008
A
BIG thank you
A really big thank you to everybody who helped at the Church
Fete on July 5th.
Everybody worked very
hard and even the weather kept fine! Very grateful thanks to the
Wombwell family for donating the cost of the band from the dormant Farming
Weekend account, and everyone else who gave so generously.
We have made a grand total of £3750 for Church funds - which
is fantastic.
The 2009 Church Fete will be on July 4th.
The Vicar, Churchwardens and PCC are very grateful to
everybody who supports this event.
Monica Lilley - Fete Organiser Silent Auction
A huge
thank you to everyone who donated goods to our silent auction. The auction raised
over £1000 for church funds - a really splendid result which was entirely due
to the generosity of all the kind people who gave us such a variety of
excellent items. Rosemary and Colin Hayes
Like last year most of the prizes stayed in Ickleton. The first prize went to Helen Woodbine, a
work colleague of Martin Wright of Southfield.
A list of prize-winners is on the village notice board and in the Lion.
I would like to thank all of you who sold tickets for us,
and those who supported us by buying them.
Many thanks to our generous sponsors for the prizes, and to Costcutters
and the Ickleton Lion for acting as ticket sales outlets.
Thanks also to those who contributed bottles for my Bottle
Stall. Neil McKillen
Routemaster Bus Raffle
The winner of the raffle prize for a trip around London on
the Routemaster bus for 8 people was Annabel Hoare. Well done Annabel! The
owner of the bus, Chris Jolly, will be taking Annabel and her family/ friends into
central London from Chigwell in Essex and back, visiting sights such as
Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square, where the no. 38 bus should feel quite
at home. The bus will also be displaying Stop Hanley Grange posters. Martin

Pet Show
Happily, the sun shone so our earlier fears of a soggy doggy
show were unfounded!
Debbie, our judge, divided the entrants into three groups,
and after careful examination and observation, the results are as follows:
Puppy class
First was Fiona’s 5½ month old Sussex spaniel, aptly
named Rusty, closely followed in second place by Jenny Absolom’s 9 month old
Border terrier, Hetty.
Adult class
Jenny Pell was delighted that, after years of entering the
show, her 5 year old Springer spaniel, Hershey, was awarded first place, with
Sian Wombwell’s golden labrador, Jed, in second position. Third was two year
old Dottie (of mixed ancestry) shown by Harriet, while Mrs. Alderman’s Cocker
spaniel, 5 year old Buster, received a special award in this group.
Veteran class
Scamp the Cocker spaniel, at 16 years the oldest entrant,
was placed first after being shown by his owner Mrs. Alderman. Second was nine
year old black Labrador, George, owned by churchwarden Simon Casement, who had
to award his own dog with the rosette. Max Judd’s Staffordshire bull terrier,
China, aged 14 years, was placed third, while the special award went to the
Marshall’s black labrador, 11 year old Gina.
Finally, Best in show was awarded to
the winner of the puppy class, Rusty, the Sussex spaniel.
Congratulations to all entrants and their owners. Special thanks to Debbie of Village Vets
(formerly Davey’s) for giving willingly of her time and professional expertise.
We look forward to seeing you all, plus friends, next year
but, in the meantime, see you on your doggy walks.
Jenny Pell and Hilary Rule
THEATRE GROUP
Our next show will be on Saturday 4th October,
when we welcome the ‘Cambridge Crofters’ for an evening of Folk music. More
details next month. Gordon

MOBILE LIBRARY

the last two Bulletins.

NEWS FROM DUXFORD
SCHOOL
This term at school has already been packed with exciting
activities. There have been so many
highlights that it is hard to choose.
In June our school choir sung at the Barnardo’s combined
school choirs’ fundraising concert at the Royal Albert Hall, something that
will not be forgotten by the children or their families for a very long
time. We also took part in ’Walk to
School Week’, where many of the children and parents left their cars at home
and walked, scooted and cycled to school.
All the children took part in Worldwide and Wonderful
Creativity Day. Each year group visited
a different school in the area, with many activities including dancing, music
and storytelling from Africa, India and South America. Duxford School echoed to the sound of
African drums all day, which was very atmospheric!
The rain held off for the school fete in June, and it was a
really enjoyable afternoon. It was also
great to hold the school fete alongside the church fete on the recreation
ground, making it a really wonderful community day. The PTA raised a fantastic £2,800 for the school – a record and a
wonderful achievement.
Some of the children designed recycling posters as part of
the children’s initiative to run a ‘greener’ school. Stan Woolston, a local artist, came into school to judge this
competition. Some of our Year 5 and 6
children took part in the UK Junior Mathematical Challenge held at Sawston
Village College recently. All the
children did very well, and we are really delighted to be able to report that
some of our children were awarded gold, silver and bronze medals for their
efforts.
On 2nd July the school had ‘Church Day’ where
members of the local churches came in and ran the day in mixed age groups with
the theme of the parables. Church Day
is a very special Duxford tradition, and we are most grateful to our visitors
for giving up their time to join us.
On Friday 4th July the whole school visited the
Imperial War Museum. We had a great
opportunity to have a whole school photograph taken in front of the visiting
B-17 Flying Fortress ‘Liberty Belle’, and again the weather held out for a
school picnic in the grounds.
I’m sure that the rest of term will be just as busy, with
Sports Day, trips to the Botanic Gardens for Years 1 & 2, welcoming new
children at our taster sessions in reception, and saying farewell and good luck
to Year 6 children with a Year 6 performance, assembly and leavers’
barbeque.
Life never stands still at Duxford School! Clare Delderfield - Parent Governor
GT. CHESTERFORD
& DISTRICT GARDENING SOCIETY
On Wednesday July 2nd we held our biennial mini
flower show. It is always a light hearted event with a chance to meet up and talk
to each other whilst looking at the exhibits.
Overall winner was our treasurer Gerry Birch, with a record
number of points, followed closely by Marylin Richardson. Well done both of you!
On August 6th we visit the gardens of Wolfson
College, Cambridge, arriving at 6.30 p.m. for a conducted tour.
There is no meeting in August. The next meeting will be on
September 3rd, when Margaret Waddy will talk about ‘Propagation and
Grafting’.
Visitors welcome. Cynthia

THANK YOU
We would like to thank all our friends and neighbours for
the kind ‘get well’ messages and cards during Bill’s stay in hospital. He is now making a good progress and I have
now recovered from my illness.
Again, many thanks.
Iris and Bill Rule
CONGRATULATIONS TO…..Simon Duke and Heather Jones who were married
at the church of St Andrew the Great, Cambridge on 29th June.
WELCOME TO…..Simon and Luciana Day and Edward who
is 13 months old, who have moved to Abbey Street.
LETTER FROM
SOLIHULL
Just a few lines to say how much David and I enjoyed the
fete on the 5th. There
didn’t seem as many people as usual - maybe the prospect of a wet day had put
people off. When we set off at 8.30 a.m. there was really heavy rain and we
were pleased it cleared up, although stayed breezy. Everyone had worked hard as always, and it was nice to see
several friends with cakes and coffee on arrival. Ickleton village seems to suit residents, people look so well,
especially Tony and Eileen Godfrey, and whoever makes all the lovely cakes! I
enjoyed a ginger cake and the meringues and David had some gooseberries.
Mick Bristow commented on how many residents remember us
‘come homers’ as children.
I have several dates at the Solihull Riding Club for
dressage judge waiting, but entries seem down. People choose the competitions,
as the lorries cost a fortune to fuel.
How times change! All the best to everyone. Molly Dagley (nee
Clements)
