Police Neighbourhood Panel Meeting – 6th April
2009: Lewis Duke,
Jocelyn Flitton and Pam Fearn attended this meeting. In view of the recent vandalism at the Village Hall, it was felt
that it might be beneficial if the Village Hall was represented. Anti Social behaviour was still high on most
villages’ priorities. The police
issued a reminder about Distraction and Dwelling burglaries which are taking
place in the area. Speedwatch
– only 1 parish had replied to the police.
Flooding – Ickleton Parish Council is extremely concerned about flooding
particularly after the recent event.
The matter was discussed with Wellcome Trust, who have been discussing
it with the Environment Agency. The
Parish Council will be making contact with the Environment Agency shortly.
Annual Parish Meeting – please come along on to the village hall on Wednesday
27th May @ 7.30 p.m. to have a drink and a chat. This is an opportunity to ask questions and
air your views with your elected Parish Councillors, on any matters concerning
the village. We look forward to seeing
you.

SAFARI
SUPPER – 13th June
At the time of writing tickets for the
Safari Supper are yet to go on sale, but there has already been a promising
level of interest, and several people have offered to cook and host a course.
However we need many more cooks, hosts and participants. While this is a fund
raising event for the village church, we very much hope that it will appeal to
a wide cross section of villagers and be a real community event.
Tickets are £14 a head to include three
courses at different homes around the village. One glass of wine, cheese,
biscuits and coffee are also included. Tickets need to be ordered using the
booking form available from Jackie, Mandy or Caroline jackie.fishhut@btinternet.com mandy.jeffery@tiscali.co.uk pjulian.owen@btinternet.com
Full
details were in last months ICENE but do call one of us if you have any
queries. Tickets must be ordered by the
end of May. We do hope you’ll join us!

ICKLETON CHURCH
FETE – July 4th
Many
thanks to everybody who has got in touch about the Church Fete, but we still
need more help.
It
has been suggested that we have skittles and splat the rat; if anybody would
like to do these please get in touch.
Also we need somebody to run the lucky dip and ‘guess how many sweets in
a large sweet jar’. Has anybody got a
large sweet jar we could borrow?
If
you are having a spring clean do please remember us. The following people would
be willing to collect and store things for the fete. Please ring first.

CHURCH BELL REPAIRS
Because
of work needed on the clapper and crown-staple assemblies, our bells will be
out of action between 27th May and 2nd July to enable
this work to be carried out by Taylors Eayre and Smith of Loughborough.
I
believe this is the first major work to be carried out since the present bells
were installed in 1927.
The
church clock is unaffected as it strikes on the bell on the spire. David

ICKLETON SOCIETY
History
of Cambridgeshire Allotments
On
Wednesday 6th May Jacqueline Cooper (a noted local historian) will
give a talk in the Village Hall on the history of allotments in
Cambridgeshire. The talk is free and we
hope as many people as possible will come along, particularly as Ickleton now
has allotments again. The evening
starts with the very short AGM at 7.30p.m., followed by free wine and
refreshments and then Jacqueline’s talk at about 8.00p.m. Do come along.
Membership
Membership of the Society comes up for renewal this
month. The fees are being held at £5
per person and £12 per family. The
Society uses these funds to maintain and add to the village archives, subsidise
some social events and to help protect our village environment from inappropriate
developments. Last year, the Society
played a big part in the successful campaign to defeat Tesco’s plans for the
Hanley Grange eco-town at Hinxton. If
you haven’t yet joined please consider doing so. Get in touch with John Fowler.

DEBUT CONCERT FOR FOUR VILLAGES’
ORCHESTRA
If you’ve ever felt like ‘Puttin’
on the Ritz’ head on down to Duxford on May 16th.
An exciting new orchestra will be making its debut at the United Reformed
Church.
The Four Villages’ Orchestra – as its name suggests – has members hailing from
four local
villages: Ickleton, Duxford,
Whittlesford and Hinxton.
They’ve been together for just over a year and a half and now they’re ready to
go public. The repertoire includes
music from the shows, the movies and the musicals – the emphasis is on a fine
old toe-tapping time.
The concert starts at 7.30 p.m. - white tie and tails are optional - but the orchestra can certainly
offer you music fit for a ‘Lion King’. Come along – you’ll be ‘Over the Rainbow’.
Tickets are £5, £3 concessions, on the night or reservations on ( 530157. Proceeds from the concert will be split
between the United Reformed Church, Duxford and the Four Villages’ Orchestra. Nigel Bennett
DEATH
Edmund
Lawson QC – We were sorry to learn he had died peacefully after a short
illness. We will always be indebted to
him for providing our successful village shop.
HINXTON MILL OPEN DAY
A new season of open days begins at Hinxton's Water
Mill this month, beginning on May 10th to mark National Mills Day.
Those who miss the wonderful teas since
the retirement of Joyce Fordham and her team from baking on a regular basis
might like to know a new fundraising idea is being planned for later in the
season. On Sunday September 6th you can pack up a picnic and potter
around Hinxton Water Mill for a delightful afternoon by the
river. Bring your own rug and basketful of treats and reserve a
picnic plot in the Miller's Cottage garden, as volunteers
operate the working mill as a finale to the summer opening season
(water levels permitting). Plots for up to six people can be booked
for £10 (larger groups by arrangement) and proceeds will help
the Cambridge Preservation Society with essential upkeep costs of the
mill. Picnic space is limited so early booking is essential. Chairs and
tables are also available to rent if required and pots of tea
for picnickers from £2.50 (bring your own mugs etc), along with a
tempting cake stall. Admission to the Mill is £1.50 for adults, 50p children
and CPS members are free. The event will run from 2.30-5.30 p.m.
Contact Sue Elliott for more information and to book. (Please note:This is a
private garden and much of it is open to the river, so for safety please
note parties including children should ask for a picnic plot in the front
garden).

Productions Ltd have adapted Christopher Marlowe’s 16th century
classic for the purpose of touring diverse venues such as Theatres, Arts
Centres and Village Halls. It includes
some of the most popular dramatic verse ever written, dance, song and much
comedy and has received much acclaim from several regional newspapers and
radios. Tickets are now on sale at

8.00 p.m. There will be a pre show bar until 7.50 p.m. The

The
saying goes ‘If you want to get ahead get a hat!’ Members had a lovely time viewing and trying on the variety of
different hats and fascinators brought along to the April meeting by Heidi of
The Hat Pin, Whittlesford.
After
the fun came the serious bit – the resolution was ‘The Plight of the Humble
Honey Bee.’ Christine Greet urged
members to grow flowers and shrubs to attract bees - such as aquilegia,
verbena, cornflower etc. Bees
particularly like blue flowers.
To
encourage us, little lavender bushes were included in the raffle prizes.
The
next meeting will be on 20th May when Peter Jackson from Scotsdales
will talk on ‘Bedding Plants for the Summer’.
Plants will be for sale.
Visitors welcome.

DEATH
We
are sorry to record the death of George Goddard, who died peacefully in his
sleep on 23rd March, aged 75. A much loved uncle and grandad to
Howard, Henry and Oliver Goddard.
WELCOME TO THE WETLANDS
NATURE RESERVE
The
Wetlands Nature Reserve consists of a mix of habitats, including naturally
filled ponds, wet grassland, wet woodland, riverbank, shrubs and individual
specimen trees. The creation of these
areas will help contribute to local wildlife targets for the county as a whole, and we need your help to keep it
a diverse natural habitat, for all to enjoy.
It
is run by the Wellcome Trust with support and advice being provided by the
Cambridgeshire Wildlife Trust.
All
events are free to attend (however, we would ask that you consider a donation
to the Wildlife Trust for the training courses). Although there are limits on the number of people who can attend,
children are more than welcome when accompanied by an adult. You do not need any experience of equipment
for these activities as you will be trained on the day. Refreshments will be provided. If you would like more information on any of
the events below, or would like to book a place on one of them, please contact
Gemma (gemma@ebi.ac.uk).
In
May and June (dates to be confirmed) we will be holding a couple of lunch time
sessions to help keep the Himalayan balsam under control. This exotic weed is
dominating the riverbank so we will be hand pulling some to keep it in
check. Sandwiches will be provided for
all those who come and help with the control of this invasive plant.
