The following items were discussed
at the meeting held on Wednesday 20th May 2009:
Adoption of Year-end Accounts
31/03/09 It was unanimously
agreed to adopt the year-end accounts.
The Clerk will now submit these to the External Auditors.
Planning application(s) received from SCDC:
Robin Driver and Tim
Pavelin declared an interest in S/0437/09/F and would not take part in any of
the discussions relating to this application.
S/0313/09/LB – Alterations-remove

Planning application(s) granted
by SCDC:
S/0206/09/F
– Erection of Grain Store, Repositioning of Polytunnels and Glass Houses – RAGT
Seeds Ltd., Grange Road.
Tree Works subject to preservation
order or situated within a conservation area - granted by SCDC:
Peter Wombwell reported
that the Formula 1 testing started today at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford
and he had (on a personal level) filed a complaint about the noise. Lewis Duke had driven to Duxford and agreed
the noise was quite loud. It had been
mentioned on the News this evening that they would be testing again next
Wednesday. It was felt this could lead
to possible trespassing and traffic problems in the future at Grange Road,
Duxford. It was agreed we need to
monitor the situation and notify the police about our concerns.
Terry Sadler asked if
a reminder (on behalf of the Wetlands Management Committee) could be put in
Icene about dogs. Dog Fouling –
is still causing concern in various areas and the Wetlands Management Committee
would appreciate it if dogs are kept on leads when walking through the grounds
and are also kept out of the lakes where wildlife are nesting/swimming.
Flooding – The
Chairman had been speaking with Mr & Mrs Bristow and recommended that a
letter be sent to them thanking them for their diligence in monitoring the
waste soils which are being deposited on the land adjacent to M11 Stump Cross.
The Clerk had received
correspondence from Phil Hunt, Uttlesford District Council, Environment Agency
(Ipswich), informing us that the issue had been raised through their internal
Incident Communication Service which considers if enforcement action is
required. We had also had a long e-mail from Tony Sullivan, Enforcement
Officer, Minerals & Waste Planning, Essex County Council explaining the
-2-
situation – Background, ECC
Involvement and the Current Situation.
Copies of these will be sent to John and Margaret Bristow. After discussion it was agreed to notify the
following:
Duxford Primary School will be visiting
Ickleton on Tuesday 16th June for their annual ‘Church Day’ between
10.00 a.m. – 2.00 p.m. They intend to
have a whole school picnic on the Recreation Ground, weather permitting, as
well as having 1 or 2 activities. We
would ask residents to take care if driving to the village hall car park and,
if walking their dogs, to please keep them on a lead.
Policy Surgery – Monday 27th
July. It is proposed that
the Police will hold a surgery in the Village Hall between 10.00 a.m. – 12.00
noon. Everyone is invited to drop in
and chat with them; it is hoped the children who attend Froglets will enjoy
seeing the Police Car.
Sergeant Mark Kathro is leaving
Sawston to take up a similar job in Cambridge City. Sergeant Rebecca Williams, now based at Histon police station,
will replace him from 1st June.
Other items of interest:
The police have attended
incidents in the village, which involved a man trying to steal a dog and a
house burglary.
County Council and European Parliamentary Elections take place on Thursday 4th
June 2009. Voting will take place in
the Village Hall.
Annual General Meeting held 20th May 2009. Robin Driver was re-elected Chairman and Lewis Duke

ICKLETON ALLOTMENTS
The committee would like to thank Lewis Duke for
ploughing another two rows providing further plots. This is due
to the ever increasing interest in the allotments. It would be great to see
more Ickleton residents take on an allotment. For further information please
visit the Ickleton Village website or contact Louise Andrew, loulou1979@hotmail.com or Lisa

DEATH
We are sorry to record the death of Mrs. Hilary Henderson,
formerly of Abbey Street, who died on 2nd May aged 94. We were
grateful to Mrs. Henderson who used to check the ‘Icene’ for us in the early

Silent Auction at
Church Fete
2008’s SILENT AUCTION raised a considerable sum for church
funds and we hope that it will be equally successful in 2009. Last year, due to
your generosity, there were some amazing bargains to be had and the bidding was
fast and furious.
So, once again, we are appealing for good quality items –
things which you may not be able to use any more, for instance, but which
someone else would really like to have.
Please have a hunt round and see what you can find for the
auction.
If necessary, we can come and collect your contributions -
and it would be helpful to have them before the fete so that we can mark them
up with reserve prices.
Thank you very much, in advance, for your support. And thank
you, again, to all of you who made last year’s auction such a success, either
by giving us goods or by bidding for them.
Rosemary and Colin Hayes
Durhams Farmhouse, Butcher’s Hill <r.hayes@btinternet.com>
There is still time to sponsor the fete as this helps with
expenses. The Parochial Church Council sends a leaflet to every house a week
before the fete, to advertise the event, and one is given to everybody who
comes to the Fete, with the names of the sponsors and their details printed on
the back. This costs £25 per line. We
hope to have 600 leaflets printed this year. The deadline for this will be 7th
June. Please either get in touch with me or put a cheque through my door, 8
Brookhampton Street, made out to Ickleton Parochial Church Council.
If you need any more information about the Church Fete please
contact me.

Pet Show
This will take place as usual this year, from the verandah
of the village hall. Dogs and small pets e.g. rabbits, hamsters etc. are
welcome but, please, NO CATS, as they find it all too stressful. Please register your pet(s) by 2.30
p.m. There will be a minimum donation
of £1.50 per pet.
Judging will
take place at about 2.45 p.m. by Debbie from Village Vets at Pampisford.
Hope to see
you with your furry friends on the day. Jenny Pell and Hilary Rule

ICKLETON SOCIETY
The Magic Flute
On 2nd May a small group of members enjoyed a
memorable performance of Mozart’s Magic Flute by the English Touring Opera at
the Cambridge Arts Theatre. The set,
lighting and costumes were inspired and the standard of singing was
excellent. You certainly didn’t have to
be an opera buff to enjoy this modern and quirky production.
History
of Cambridgeshire Allotments
On Wednesday 6th May, after the Society’s AGM and
wine and nibbles, 21 members enjoyed a talk by Jacqueline Cooper (a noted local
historian) on the history of allotments in 19th Century
Cambridgeshire. Most of us weren’t
allotment holders but, to the surprise of many us, this talk was
fascinating. We learnt how landowners,
the clergy and others encouraged the provision of allotments after the Swing
Riots by agricultural labourers in the 1830s.
The benefits were thought to include a reduction in drinking, better
servants and prevention of ‘contagious infatuation’! The rules imposed on early allotment holders were also rather
different from those of today’s allotment societies. You could lose your plot if found guilty of theft or misdemeanour
or, if your allotment was provided by the clergy, you didn’t attend
church. John Taylor gave a very nice
vote of thanks and wondered if this was the origin of the expression ‘to lose
the plot’. Perhaps someone knows?

DR. FAUSTUS COMES TO ICKLETON
Although Dr Faustus is a tragic story of a man who sells his
soul to the Devil in return for power and pleasure, the Theatre Group cleverly
adapted the play making it humorous as well as poignant. The battle between good and evil may be an
old theme but it is always riveting. We
could probably all identify with the desire of Doctor Faustus for worldly
pleasures and the temptations of the Seven Deadly Sins!
The demon Mephistopheles – conjured up by Doctor F using his
magical powers and the eerie dance they performed was sinister yet funny and
made us all squirm a bit. We felt
slightly uncomfortable – after all, who hasn’t flirted with the Devil from time
to time.
The beautiful temptress Lucifer was also superb and I think
we all went home feeling we had experienced a thought-provoking performance by
some extremely talented actors.
Ann Worthing
THE CHESTERFORDS,
ICKLETON & HINXTON W.I.
W.I. members could be forgiven if they thought they had come
to the wrong meeting on May 20th when guest speaker Peter Jackson
from Scotsdale Nurseries gave a very informative talk on new varieties of
summer bedding plants. Peter brought along a lovely selection of annuals and biennials
and explained how cuttings could be taken and how pruning could prolong their
life throughout the summer.
Afterwards members were able to buy the plants at a very
reasonable price and not many plants went back to Scotsdale!
The next meeting on June 17th will be held in
Hinxton Village Hall when the guest speaker, Douglas Kent, will speak about ‘The
Preservation of our Ancient Buildings’. Visitors welcome

DUXFORD SCHOOL
This term has yet again been busy and full of excitement for
the children. It was lovely to come
back after Easter to such a sunny week.
The Octagon was used for class work, and the children enjoyed playing
out in the sunshine.
So, what’s been happening, you ask!
Children in years 2-6 have been enjoying their weekly
swimming lessons at SVC pool.
Our Year 5s returned tired but happy after two days packed
full of activities at Mepal schools activity centre. Year 6 children have worked very hard on their SATs tests. In July it will be their turn to have a
well deserved residential trip to the PGL centre at Caythorpe in Lincolnshire!
This term, parents have had the chance to come in and enjoy
a school lunch with the children. Each week a different class is able to invite
the parents along, and there has been great excitement amongst the
children. I am looking forward to my
opportunity to select from the menu.
The school meals providers have been encouraging children to try school
meals by having a daily lottery winner.
Each day, one of the dinner trays has a winning sticker underneath. Whoever picks up the tray wins a prize,
which they select from a pot at Monday morning assembly!
I attended a Monday assembly this term. They are a wonderful start to the school
week. Children receive ‘special cards’
from the Head teacher for good work or behaviour; the ‘House group’ with the
most points received in the past week stand up to receive applause from the
rest of the school; and birthdays are marked with each child being asked about
their celebration, followed by the whole school singing ‘Happy Birthday’. It really is a lovely occasion.
Parents with children in the Reception Class enjoyed the
class assembly on the 13th May, which was all about ‘mini beasts’ or
‘creepy crawlies’ as they were in my day!
The children had produced some wonderful pastel pictures of various
creatures, and treated us to a great rendition of ‘The Ugly Bug Ball’! We look forward to the other years’ class
assemblies later in the term.
The term, of course, will end with the much awaited sports
day on Wednesday 15th July, or Thursday 16th July if the
weather conspires against us again! Clare
