The Annual Parish Meeting was held on Wednesday 27th May,
and was attended by The Chairman, Parish Clerk, 29 residents and our County
Councillor.
Reports from ten
organisations were read out and it was most encouraging to hear good news in
most of the reports.
Richard
Summers of RAGT Seeds Ltd gave an
overview of the company’s history and overseas connections and its subsequent
move to Grange Road, Ickleton.
The following points were raised:
The
following items were discussed at the meeting held on Wednesday 17th
June 2009:
Frogge
Street: The road was closed today (17th June) for
resurfacing to take place. This had
caused problems as no notice about the closure was received but especially to
the bus service, despite the fact that Highways did notify Stagecoach, this did
not get passed on to the drivers. It
was agreed to write to Cllr T Stone (Copy: Stagecoach/D Lilley). (* see end)
Planning
application(s) received from SCDC:
S/0437/09/F – Replacement Shed – AMENDMENT – Revised
Fenestration to front and rear elevation including omission of port hole window
– 44 Frogge Street – Information only.
S/0766/09/F – Garage/Workshop/Store with Annexe Over (AMENDED
design to include 2 Velux escape roof-lights) – 33 Frogge Street - Approve with a note to move the
application as soon as possible.
The Parish Council expressed concerns that
the Conservation Department appear to be causing unnecessary delays with
applications and we should continue to monitor the situation.
Planning
application(s) granted by SCDC:
S/0313/09/LB - Alterations-remove
partition between kitchen & dining room; remove partition between cloakroom
& boiler/store & block external door; form new opening in bedroom wall
& convert adjacent bedroom to an en suite bathroom – 20 Church Street.

S/1703/06/HSC – Storage of Acrylonitrile – Land off Ickleton Road,
Duxford – Hexcel Composites.
S/1749/06/O – Construction of a Carbon Fibre Precursor Plant –
Land off Ickleton Road, Duxford – Hexcel Composites.
Village
Sign - The Chairman had approached
Vila Mila who had verbally agreed to carry out the work. The Clerk will make contact to confirm and
enquire about the cost.
Police
Surgery – Monday 27th July 2009 – this will be advertised and hopefully as many as possible will visit
the police for a chat.
Coploe
Road – Speeding and 30mph Sign
Following
the Annual Parish Meeting, the Clerk had contacted CCC Highways. A reply had been received from David Lines
as follows:
“I have looked into moving the 30mph
speed limit further along Coploe Road and unfortunately it would not comply
with the County Council’s speed limit policy. In addition, moving the 30mph
speed limit further away from the start of the village development towards the
M11 bridge can also have the detrimental effect of increasing vehicle
speeds within the village environs as motorists tend to simply ignore
the speed limit as it starts in, what is effectively, open countryside.
Pedestrian
warning signs would have a limited effect, but with no discretionary budget
funding available from the County Council, the parish would have to fund this.
The
ideal solution would be the provision of a footway, and in hindsight this is
something that probably should have been considered when the location
of the new allotments was chosen. I would guess the costs of providing a
footway is something that the Parish Council could simply not afford. I am
sorry I could not be more positive with regards to this matter.”
The
Clerk was asked to write to Cllr. Tim Stone requesting warning signs as have
been installed in Fowlmere near the caravan site.
Flooding. The
Parish Council is continuing to monitor the situation at the land adj. to Stump
Cross, Great Chesterford. The
thunderstorm on Monday night meant several drains were unable to take the water
i.e. Abbey Street and Mill Lane. The
Clerk was asked to report the drain situation in Mill Lane to Highways.
Wellcome
Trust will be letting off fireworks
on Saturday 11th July at 10.30p.m. for approximately 15
minutes. They ask that you keep any
pets inside.
Jocelyn
Flitton – Parish Clerk
* It appears Highways told County, but County did not
tell Stagecoach!
NEW ORGANIST(S)
NEEDED FOR ICKLETON CHURCH
Can you help us? Or do
you know someone who can?
Joan Mead is retiring next October as the Ickleton church
organist. She has held the post for several years and, although she has to make
a thirty mile round trip each time she comes, she has never let us down. Not
only has she played for the regular services in church but she has also put in
a lot of work preparing pieces for events such as the Good Friday drama
productions, anthems for major church
festivals and music for weddings, funerals and
special concerts. And she often comes and practises the organ during the
Tuesday coffee mornings, adding another layer to the conviviality of the
occasion.
We are enormously grateful for her skill, dedication and loyalty
over the years and are really sad to lose her but absolutely understand that
she feels that the time has come to step down.
So – we need to replace her and we are looking for an
organist who can play for three church services here every month - one sung Eucharist and two sung Evensongs.
Alternatively, there might be two organists who would like to share this commitment.
This is a paid
post and anyone interested should contact me for full details.
Fortunately, Joan has given us plenty of notice, so we hope
that we can appoint a new organist (or organists) within the next month or two
so that there will be a seamless handover in the Autumn.
Please spread the word among your contacts. Many thanks.

Special All-Age Service with
‘GenR8’ at Ickleton Church on July 12th at 10.00a.m.
If you have or have had children
at primary school anywhere in Cambridgeshire in the last 8 years then the
chances are you may have heard of GenR8. Part of Scripture Union, GenR8
comprises teams of volunteers who travel around the local primary schools each
term presenting lively and entertaining assemblies with a Christian theme. The
children are always delighted to see GenR8, and we were once favourably
compared with a visit from Father Christmas! Much of GenR8s material is written
by John Hardwick, who will be familiar to children who have attended VBS in
Saffron Walden.
As part of their support for our local schools the
three Church Councils in our group have supported GenR8 financially. In
recognition of this and as a ‘Thank you’ GenR8 are coming to Ickleton to take a
special All-Age service on Sunday July 12th. The theme will be
around ‘Giving Thanks and Being Special’ and will include a mix of sketches,
modern action songs, puppets and more. So why not come along and get a taste of
what the children enjoy so much at school! This is definitely ‘Church with a
difference’ and all are very welcome. Mandy Jeffery
(GenR*member)
SAFARI SUPPER
On Saturday 13th June some 50 people were to be
found walking round the village, clasping their bottles of wine, en route to
visiting three different hosts for their starters, main course and
dessert. Finally we all met up in the
village hall for cheese, coffee and a final drink. Many of us found ourselves visiting people we had never met
before and had the opportunity to talk to people we often pass in the street
but do not know well. It was all great
fun and we were blessed with a fine warm evening. Many thanks are due to those who offered their homes and provided
food and to all who joined in to make it a success: and we raised about £700
for church funds. Jackie

HEALING MINISTRY
Since Andrew Schofield initiated this ministry, a team of
members from the Parish Churches of Hinxton, Ickleton, Duxford, Pampisford and
Whittlesford and the URC Churches of Whittlesford and Duxford have been meeting
once a month to make a list of those prayer requests received and to pray for
those requests, both regularly and at the meeting. Prayer request cards and a box are available in each of the
churches and those requests are prayed for each Sunday. There is also the regular healing evensong
on the third Sunday of each month at 6.30 p.m. at St Peter’s, Duxford.
Healing is not always for physical problems of illness, but
for those things that make us anxious, for situations beyond our control, for
problems and pressures at home and at work.
Our loving God longs for us to turn to him and ask for his help so that
we can be made whole in body, mind and spirit.
Please feel able to ask for help or join us at the healing
service on the third Sunday.

ICKLETON SOCIETY
Saving Energy
With the costs of gas and electricity being so high, we were
very interested to find that English Heritage has put a tool on its website to
help period house owners find ways to save energy. Visit www.climatechangeandyourhome.org.uk/live/ and click on the
picture on the right hand side.
Land between Grassy Lane and M11, Stump Cross
The Society is very concerned about the impact on our
village, and others down stream, from the dumping of waste soil on this land
adjacent to the river. We are
supporting the Parish Council on this issue and we will be making representations
to the appropriate authorities and seeking a satisfactory resolution. Rachel
Radford
We were saddened and frustrated by the latest act of
vandalism on our newly decorated village hall, which is such an asset to our
village.
The Committee will be discussing additional security
measures to meet the requirements of the insurance company.
Your help
would be much appreciated. If you notice anything untoward, please contact the
Booking Secretaries (see back page for details).

GREAT CHESTERFORD &
DISTRICT GARDENING SOCIETY
There was an excellent attendance at the June meeting to
hear a talk on ‘Hardy Bulbs’ by Francis Mount.
Reminders of the various garden outings were given – reference
June ‘Icene’.
There were twenty entries for the Best Rose Competition,
which was won by Ann Macdonald. Well
done Ann!
The next meeting will be on July 1st when Peter
Jackson from Scotsdales will give a talk on growing orchids. The competition will be for a herbaceous
flower.
I had a lovely surprise when the members presented me with a
lovely clematis to celebrate my 80th birthday! I will give it lots of T.L.C.

ROYCE OF ROLLS-ROYCE
Maurice Richardson of the Rolls-Royce Owners’ Club has been
in touch with Andrew Shepperd, as he discovered that Frederick Henry Royce –
the ‘engineering brains’ of Rolls-Royce – had lived in Frogge Street, Ickleton
for a time as a child. He appears in the 1871 census, aged 8.
There is a degree of mystery over the early years of Royce
and his family, as he was rather reticent about his childhood. He was born at
Alwalton, Hunts, but it is not possible to tell which house he lived in in
Ickleton in 1871. It was probably near ‘The Beehive’.
His father James Royce is described in the census as a
‘miller and baker’ though he was probably employed (at King’s Mill at Great
Chesterford?) rather than working for himself. He had moved to Ickleton after
his milling business at Alwalton went bankrupt in 1867/8, and died in Greenwich
Union Workhouse in 1872.
We assume Frederick Henry Royce went to school in Ickleton
for a time, and one wonders if any of the Ickleton children realised, in later
life, who they had been at school with.
GLASSES FOUND
Prescription glasses were found in the vicinity of the
village hall. Please contact David and Jean Whittaker.

Silent
Auction at Church Fete
Although we have been given some lovely items, WE STILL NEED
MORE! Please have a hunt around
and see what you can find for the auction. Good quality items – things which you may not be able to use any more,
for instance, but which someone else would really like to have. If
necessary, we can come and
collect your contributions.
Thank you, in advance, for your help. And thank you again to
all of you who made last year’s silent auction such a success, either by giving
us goods to sell or by bidding for them.

THANK YOU
What a lovely 80th birthday I had! All my family
and friends from near and far visited me.
I received 58 birthday cards, a very pretty shrub from my
garden from the Ickleton Over 60s and my home could be mistaken for a florists
shop! A very dear friend made me a
superb birthday cake which was reduced to crumbs by the end of the day, so I
wish to thank each and every one of you for making my birthday so very
special. Thank you. Cynthia Rule
