Flooding:
Land adj. Stump Cross – Robin Driver had sent
an e-mail to Cllr Stone (a copy has not yet been circulated). Lewis Duke has been liaising with Peter
Fentem (Chairman of Gt Chesterford Parish Council). Mr Fentem had sent a draft of a letter he is sending to Mike
Bodell at the Environment Agency. The
letter was read out and the Councillors were happy for this letter to be
sent. Lewis Duke would thank Mr Fentham
for writing the letter. It was agreed
that a dossier on flooding would be compiled by Lewis Duke and Robin Driver,
which they would communicate to Mr Bodell to help him with his study.
Drain top of Mill Lane - Robin Driver, Lewis Duke and the Clerk met
with Mike Cooper (CCC Highways) to discuss this problem. Mr Cooper pointed out that he
flushed/cleared all the drains down Mill Lane until the drain crossed the road
near the level crossing into a ditch, which was on Network Rail ground. The Clerk had contacted Network Rail and it
is hoped that they will clear the ditch.
Abbey Street opp. Methodist Chapel – The above party then
inspected the problem here. The drain
that was supposed to assist in taking the rainwater had been blocked up when
the kitchen extension to the Chapel had been built. Lewis Duke agreed with Mike Cooper that a soak away could be dug
in the field just past No. 72 Abbey Street.
Grange Road – A resident had
complained that flooding was occurring at the bungalows near the motorway
bridge. The party checked the road and
found that the ditch adjacent to the New House, needed to be dug out and that
the headway needed to be unblocked.

Correspondence had been received
from SCDC, forwarding from CCC details of a Emergency Planning Awareness
Seminar on 1st October at 6.00 p.m., in their offices, should anyone
wish to attend. CCC was also making
plans for the mass vaccination of the population of Cambridgeshire and was
asking for details of village halls.
This information will be passed to the Village Hall to complete and
return.
Cambridgeshire County Council had
also written asking for volunteers to support the communities. They propose to open up to 16 centres, each
operating for 12 hours a day and 7 days a week. They are looking for people who are able to deal with the public,
comfortable in a community setting and who have good organising skills. This will be put in the Icene, asking
residents to give the request their urgent consideration, and if they feel they
can help, to contact the Parish Clerk.
Other items of interest:

St Mary Magdalene Ickleton – Gift Day
Once again, as Churchwardens, we are
drawing attention to an important date in our calendar. The Gift Day is an opportunity for the
Ickleton Community to demonstrate its continued support for our lovely Church.
We appreciate that all families have
greater financial commitments than ever this year but we believe it is right to
demonstrate the challenge that we face each year to maintain the church and
provide a range of services (now including a Sunday School) to everyone in the
village.
In an effort to improve our heating
system we are in the process of replacing our oil fired boiler and bunding the
oil tank to comply with regulations.
This will cost us around £15,000.
At the same time we have made a start on the energy output from our
lighting by replacing old bulbs with new low energy bulbs. Apart from these ongoing works the annual
cost of our Parish share is about £20,000, so it is quite a challenge to meet
our commitments and to maintain a vibrant Christian ministry in our village.
Every little helps.
The Churchwardens and other members
will be on hand in the Church from 10.00 a.m. - 4.00 p.m. to welcome everyone
on Saturday 26th September. Complimentary tea/coffee and cakes will
be available all day with soup provided between 12.00 noon and 2.00 p.m. Do
please drop in if only for a few minutes.
Other Forthcoming Events:
Family Harvest Service with
Ploughman’s Lunch afterwards on Sunday 27th September @ 11.00 a.m.
Annual Harvest Supper with guest
speaker the Bishop of Huntingdon on Friday 2nd October@ 7.30 p.m. Rosemary McKillen
& Simon Casement
Renewal of Marriage Vows
To celebrate their Silver Wedding
Robert and Mandy Jeffery renewed their marriage vows at a service of
thanksgiving at Ickleton Church on 1st August conducted by Judith
Wright.
Baptism
Alara Gillie Diss daughter of Jamie
and Shelley Diss of Mill Lane and great-granddaughter of Eileen Fairweather was
baptised at Ickleton Church on 2nd August.
Help! New Church
Administrator needed.
A new three parishes administrator
is needed for the beginning of September.
Miranda Stone-Wigg has done a superb job for us and will be greatly
missed; but we need a replacement urgently.
The work is straightforward office administration: dealing with post and
emails, preparing service leaflets and attending some meetings etc, for between
4 and 6 hours a week, in the church office in Duxford Rectory. There will be
suitable clerical remuneration. If you
can help, please contact Miranda, Julie Baillie or Andrew Walker.
YOUR FIRST DIARY DATE FOR 2010!
The three churches of Duxford,
Hinxton and Ickleton are organising a pantomime which will be performed in
Ickleton Village Hall on Saturday 2nd January 2010, at 2.00
p.m. The show will be ALADDIN and will
be performed by a travelling pantomime company called Chaplins. This fun-filled extravaganza is aimed at
children aged 3-103 years (!) and features a cast of 5 professional players in
a programme lasting 2 hours. The
audience will see up to 9 colourful characters that delight and entertain with
all the antics you expect of panto!
This is not a fund-raising event
(though of course costs will have to be covered) but will be a great
opportunity to bring the three parishes together for some local Christmas-time
entertainment. Further details e.g.
ticket prices, points of purchase etc. will follow in subsequent
newsletters. Please note that tickets
will be limited!
We look forward to seeing you early
next year!

RON
SKEATES
Thank you
Rosemary, David, Marion and family
wish to thank all the people of Ickleton and surrounding areas for their
exceeding kindness, their thoughts and generosity, and for the many letters,
cards and telephone calls expressing their sympathy in the very sad loss of
Ron, and for all the flowers Rosemary has received. Thank you also for the
donations we have received for the British Heart Foundation.
A special thanks to Duxford School
and Huntsman for all their help.

SOCIETY
Memories and
Reflections of World War II
This month sees the 70th
anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War. On Friday November 6th (a few days before Remembrance
Sunday) we will be holding an evening of memories and reflections of that
war. We hope you will be able to join
us. There will be a performance of
‘Address Unknown’ by Kressmann Taylor – a novel written as a series of letters
between a Jewish art dealer, living in San Francisco, and his business partner,
who had returned to Germany in 1932 and gradually adopted the ideology of
Nazism. There will also be memories of
life on the home front, including some of the popular songs of the
time as originally made famous by Bing Crosby, the Andrews Sisters, Doris Day
and, of course, Vera Lynn. There
will be more details in next month’s Icene.
The Village Archive
The Society is very grateful to the
Village Hall Committee for providing new cupboard space to house the archives
after our cabinets were damaged during a break-in at the Village Hall some time
ago. The archives are now, once again,
easily accessible. Full details of the
archives – both the documents and photographs that we hold – can be found on
the village web site - www.ickletonvillage.co.uk. The photographs are now displayed in a new photo gallery
accessible from the website. We have a
backlog of papers and photos which will be added to the archives over the
coming weeks and months, so do keep an eye on the web site for new items. If you would like to look at anything in the
archives, please do contact us. Rachel

VILLAGE HALL OPEN DAY
To celebrate 10 years of the ‘new’
village hall there will be an open day on Saturday 24th October,
10.30 a.m. – 2.30 p.m. Everyone is
invited to come along and share in the celebration. This will also be a perfect opportunity to meet and talk to the
groups who provide regular activities in the hall and to see the excellent
facilities the hall has for both clubs and private hiring. Refreshments will be served and further
details will be in the next issue of the Icene. Village Hall Management Committee.

A LETTER
FROM THE MIDLANDS
I really think the gods smile down
on the July fetes as once again, as in the past years, the weather was to be good,
although a bit too hot for the pet show! There didn’t seem as many people at
the fete this year, but the usual ‘gang’ of helpers always make it a success, as
shown in Monica’s report. I always like
to visit ‘home; and see relations there and in Cambridge; not so many ‘come
homers’ this time, but David and I called on Graham and Lesley Morris in Bar
Hill. It was good this year as my
cousin Jane Murray came down from Lincoln and we visited her mum’s grave. She hadn’t been to Ickleton for 15 years and
remarked on some nice houses. It
certainly has changed over the 40 years I’ve lived in the Midlands, lovely to
see ‘Hovells’, my birthplace looking good!
We don’t seem to have had much
summer and as the Solihull Horse Trials are in 2 weeks, the hope is that it
won’t be as wet as it has been. It
makes the cross-country course quite dangerous, as some jumps are high. I aIways
think horse and rider are very brave. I’ll stick to Dressage.
Soon the shops will be full of Xmas
goods. Where has the year gone?
All the best to everyone. Molly (nee Clements) and David Dagley

CEMETERY
BURIAL BOOK - NOW ON THE WEBSITE
In 1884 after centuries of burials
in our Churchyard (which probably explains why the churchyard is higher than
the surrounding paths!) the Churchyard was closed and the cemetery in
Brookhampton Street opened.
This had the unfortunate consequence
that spouses were for a time separated. If the first one had been buried in the
Churchyard, from 1884 the second would be buried in the Cemetery.
The story goes that the man given
the job of getting the cemetery ground ready, Josiah Stubbings aged 22, was the
first person to be buried there.
Unfortunately his 2 month old daughter Ann was soon buried with him, she
was born a few days after his death.
In the early days many of the
funeral services took place in the cemetery chapel, often very soon after the
death.
A cemetery burial book was started
by the Parish Clerk, and this same book is still in use today. The pages of this have now been photographed
by Andrew Shepperd and placed on the Ickleton website (www.ickletonvillage.co.uk doc
archive) together with the map showing the position of all the graves, so even
if there is no gravestone it is possible to identify the position of the grave.
Even if you have no relations to
look up the book still makes interesting reading. Of the first 25 burials 12
were infants and only about a third of those buried had gravestones. A century
later almost 100% had gravestones and there is thankfully little infant
mortality.
A few people reached a good age, but
quite a few were bought back from Linton poor law institution – there was no
old age pension in those days. David
