"The Last Man," a novel by Mary Shelley (coincidently with a Friedrich cover), provided an apt title for this piece - but only the title.
The inspiration came from Caspar David Friedrich and his art.

Also, as an accompaniment, the music of Lisa Gerrard: "Amergin's Invocation" and "Never" by Angel Dust:
"A light shines on me, I feel the sun rise. Fire will banish my fear.
My dreadful black dreams, no longer they'll scare me, until the night returns..."

The Last Man

Paths converge and diverge
Fortune creates and dictates
Reasons and seasons for all
Time and life far short

Advances, chances to be taken
Ignore, unsure, remain forsaken
Follow through seas of mist
Unclear 'til the final twist

Darkened horizons past
Heightened emotions last
Through his eyes you saw
Breaking ice of yore

Only moments, but love
Still unspoken, above
Not lost forever
A step's endeavour

Fears from inside
Tears from the sky
The last man stands
Alone, yet Fate's hands
Are still his own
