Club Championship

Competition in the Championship was characterised by few wins [three of the decisive games were the last three results to be decided] and a large number of draws, which, however, were on the whole well-contested. This even points-distribution made for an open contest, but eventually the issue resolved into a three-horse race, between Ian Calvert, David Sedgwick and Paul Barclay. The latter had, however, built up a fixture backlog with the result that he had three games in hand over his rivals. In the first of these, Barclay had the misfortune to over-step the time limit when on the point of gaining the advantage against Sedgwick, who thus finished his campaign with a win and moved ahead of Calvert. Barclay now had to win his remaining two games to force a play-off, but his challenge was over with his next game, when he lost to David Malcolm. Barclay had one consolation: Tony Paish resigned their long-adjourned game without further play, taking Barclay into the prize list. David Sedgwick accordingly retained his Championship title, extending his own Club record of consecutive Championship successes to five and now shares with Len Durham and Tony Paish the Club record of nine Championships in all.
