Club Championship
We have a new Champion! Congratulations to new member, Laurence Ball, who added the Club Championship to the Nurse Lightning, both won at his first attempt. This victory brought to a close David Sedgwick's five year tenure of the Championship title. David yielded the title by the narrowest margin, but remained undefeated. Perhaps it was fitting that a tournament that started with a spate of drawn games should finish not with a bang, but with (forgive me) a pair of draws: David could not break James Aldred's resistance and Laurence's draw against Angus James was sufficient to wrap up his debut performance. It seems our new Champion is not just an accomplished performer over-the-board; we understand that Laurence was the (non-playing) Captain of South Africa at the Turin Olympiad 2006 and that he is a member of the FIDE Ethics Commission. A worthy holder of the Ryan Trophy. |
