Report by Ian Hunnable

Only four players turned up for the Ratcliff this season, which was slightly disappointing given the recent upturn in interest (seven entered the Nurse Lightning). We played a double round tournament at 10 mins per clock per game.

Laurence Ball won all his first cycle games. Ian Hunnable managed to lose to Paul Barclay from a winning position, but beat Martin Page who also lost to Barclay.

Scores after the first cycle: Ball 3, Barclay 2, Hunnable 1, Page 0

Ball continued his winning ways in the first game of the second cycle, against Barclay, so had 4/4, while Hunnable beat Page again. With two rounds to play, Ball could only be caught if he lost both games while either Barclay or Hunnable won both their remaining games.

In the first of these final two rounds, Page gained his only point of the tournament, beating Ball, while Hunnable for the second time lost from a winning position against Barclay. In the last round, Hunnable had Black against Ball while Barclay played White against Page. Barclay won his game to finish on 4 while Hunnable had the compensation of Ball's more exposed king in exchange for a pawn, each having Q, R and a number of pawns. Hunnable could harry the king without being able to land a killer blow. Then Ball advanced his rook to attack the enemy queen, overlooking the fact that the pawn he thought was supporting the rook was in fact pinned, so Hunnable could, and did, simply take the rook! A tragedy for Ball, meaning he had indeed lost his last two games and had been caught by Barclay.

Final scores: Ball, Barclay, 4/6; Hunnable, 3; Page 1.

A two game play-off at 5 mins blitz was held and Laurence Ball won both games to be this season's Ratcliff Blitz Champion, adding to his Club Championship.
