Frost Wilmot Team Blitz

Held: Wed. 6th November 2002 at 11 Belgrave Road
Controller: David Sedgwick

Barclays retain Frost Wilmot

This season's competition proved to be the most interesting and best attended Frost Wilmot for a good many seasons, following the decision to open the competition to Legal League teams on top of the invitation extended two seasons back to Banks teams. It might have been even better as a second Legal team, Slaughter & May had entered, but late calls on two of their players meant they were ultimately unable to attend.

Enter then the first outing of 'Sedgwick pairings', prepared with admirable foresight by David Sedgwick, for just such an eventuality. Sedgwick pairings implement a sort of Hutton scheme, borrowed from the world of bridge, for five teams of four boards so that no-one sits out a round as would be the case with an all-play-all for an odd number of teams. It worked like an orderly version of musical chairs without the music as one set of players occupied the same places all evening (OK they were allowed to move around between games), and the opponents moved down one board each round. Four rounds of two games each round gave rise to an 8-game competition.

ABI/Zurich and RBS both opened with a strong score of 6/8, closely followed by defending Frost Wilmot holders Barclays on 5/8. Barclays forged ahead in Round 2 when scoring 6½/8 against 4 by ABI/Zurich and 3½ from RBS. ABI/Zurich narrowed the gap on Barclays slightly in Round 3, with the bank now holding the slenderest of leads on 16½ against ABI/Zurich with 16. RBS, however, had dropped 3 points adrift of the leaders on 13½.

The last round saw two key pairings between players from the two leaders and in this respect Nitz's double triumph over Martin Page was the clincher to see Barclays home by a point and a half.

Teams given in draw order with their team letters. Each pairing involved two games (Game 1 and Game 2 in the column headed "G"). The two columns under each round heading give: the score on each board in order (but not the opponents) followed by the totals and, in the next column, the progressive team score.
See table below for individual pairings.
