Match Programme

The Club undertakes a programme of matches against external opposition, both in formal competition and as friendly fixtures. The different sections of the Match area can be accessed from the above navigation bar, and follow the link to the Fixture list for a full schedule of matches.

Formal competition

The premier competition in which the Club participates is for the Bronowski Trophy, in which the opposition comprises teams drawn from the the United Banks, the London Commercial League and the Central London Legal Chess League. This is a league competition and matches are played over 20 boards, giving plenty of opportunity for match play to Club members.

The Club also enters the Eastman Cup, a team knockout competition over 10 boards run by the London League. Entries for the Eastman Cup usually include some of the strongest teams playing in the London League. Teams knocked out in the first round of the Eastman Cup go into the Eastman Plate competition.

Friendly Fixtures

The Club has a full programme of friendly fixtures, many of them of long standing. These friendly matches are mainly played at the weekend as "away" fixtures. They include the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, the Sussex Under 175 grade team and, traditionally the last fixture of the season, the famous Hastings Club.

The Tooke Memorial Prize

This is a silver-plated goblet awarded to the member achieving the highest score in matches for the Club each season. The prize was originally a cash prize donated by Alfred Tooke in 1947 and annually thereafter. Following his death in 1955, the annual cash prize was maintained by the Club, eventually being replaced by the silver-plated goblet awarded today.
