Round 1 v Hackney |
Geoff Naldrett reports: The last time we played Hackney in the Eastman Cup Ian Reynolds spared our blushes by getting our solitary draw, so we were expecting another torrid evening! Our chances weren't improved when a number of our stronger players, including Julian Farrand, Ian Reynolds and Ian Hunnable, were not available, and when I was due to play on board 10! Stephen Berry was, however, available. The team-sheet showed that they would not be as strong as last time, though they still had a reasonable side. Our chances improved dramatically, however, when three of their players failed to turn up, giving default wins to David Sedgwick and Martin Page. Anthony Kent was also due a default win on board 9 but, as he had had a default win in his last match, their captain sportingly agreed to give me a default win on board 10, and to put his board 10 player on board 9, so that Anthony could get a game. I wasn't complaining! We tied the seven games played, giving us an unexpected win by 6½-3½. Stephen Berry, Ian Calvert and James Aldred lost, but David Malcolm, Michael Wiltshire and Anthony Kent had good wins and Tony Paish had a solid draw. Another chance to win the Eastman Plate missed, but bring on Cavendish in the semi-final! GWN |

Round 2 v Cavendish |
Geoff Naldrett reports: After our surprise win in the first round against Hackney the Cavendish captain decided he would take no chances, as he had heard that we had some useful players! He fielded four players graded over 200, and the team had an average grading of 193.6! Our average was 161.3. It had been agreed beforehand that Julian Farrand and David Malcolm, although Cavendish players, could play for ICC. The match was played at the Cavendish home venue. Stephen Berry, Mark Rich and Anthony Kent were unavailable, and James Aldred had agreed to play for another Cavendish team that night, but Roger de Coverly was avaialble to play a rare game for us. Paul Barclay agreed to play at short notice, as I did not wish to put my good run of recent results at risk! We were still, however, heavily outgraded, by between 11 points (on board 10) and 54 points (on board 1). Ian Calvert was quickly outplayed by a 205, and admitted that he had never been in with a chance, but we were holding our own on the other boards, with most games going to a quickplay finish. Ian Hunnable prevented the whitewash, gaining a draw against a 183 after 22 moves, but Ian Reynolds, David Malcolm, Tony Paish and Michael Wiltshire all eventually lost after all putting up stiff resistance. With four games to finish we were ½-5½ down, but Julian Farrand, on top board, Roger de Coverly, on board 2, and Michael Wiltshire all earnt hard-fought draws, Julian against GM Jonathan Parker (238), Roger against IM Mark Ferguson (225) and Michael against a 178 (on board 8!). In the last game to finish Paul Barclay outplayed Sid Kalinsky in the quickplay finish and thoroughly deserved his win. A 3-7 reverse, then, but a very creditablr performance against such strong opposition! GWN |
