History

The Club has held a Lightning Championship since 1971. A Lighting tournament was held in 1970-71, won by David Malcolm, but did not have the status of a Championship.

Godfrey Nurse joined the Club in 1925-26. He was elected Club Secretary in 1953-54 and served in that capacity for 27 years until his death on Christmas Day in 1981. The Nurse Cup for the Lightning Championship was provided in his memory and was first competed for in 1983-84. Fittingly, Godfrey Nurse had been the first Lightning Champion in 1971-72 and was always enthusiastic about the event. The Nurse Lightning Championship has ever since been the traditional Opening Night event each new season.
