United Banks v Insurance Played 22nd November at 1 Princes Street |
Report by Geoff Naldrett Our first Bronowski Trophy match to be played over 14 boards. All our players arrived at or soon after the start, so I could act as non-playing captain. After half an hour United Banks defaulted boards 3 and 10, as their players had not turned up, so Ian Reynolds and Tony Paish had wasted journeys. At the same time John Philpott drew with John Skipworth. An early draw seemed to suit both players. John Philpott thought it was a half point we had gained, rather than lost. An hour later Mark Rich drew - there had never seemed much advantage for either side, though Mark had an isolated queen side pawn. Soon afterwards Julian Farrand drew on top board. Paul Barclay then produced our first full point over the board, followed by wins for Messrs Hunnable, Malcolm, Page and Kent. David Sedgwick was a rook and several pawns up against two minor pieces against Ian Heppell, and Ian seemed to have chances until he lost another pawn, which gave David united passed pawns. David then duly won a complicated game. Ian Calvert was a pawn down for a long time, but managed to steer the game into a position where the extra pawn could not be promoted, so escaped with a draw. A good rearguard action! Brian Atkinson was three pawns up, but managed to reach a position where his king was trapped on the side of the board, and mate could not be prevented. United Banks' only win! Michael Wiltshire eventually outplayed his opponent in the quickplay finish to win the last game to be completed, and to give us an 11-3 win. A good start to the Bronowski Trophy season! GWN |

Insurance v Legal League Played 15th March 2006, at SJ Berwin, 10 Queen Street Place, EC |
Report by Geoff Naldrett: The Legal League kindly hosted this match at the new offices of SJ Berwin, as ICC did not have a venue. Thanks to SJ Berwin for the usual level of hospitality, which was much appreciated! ICC provided 10 of the clocks. The match, now over 14 boards, was played in four separate rooms, so it was difficult to find out what was going on, particularly as I was playing! William Diffey dropped out at short notice, so I had to play myself. Legal had the edge in grading on the higher boards and ICC on the lower boards. I won the toss and chose white on odds. Ian Calvert had a quick draw, closely followed by Paul Barclay, and Michael Wiltshire had a quick win. Tony Paish then drew. Then I drew, Ray Hamilton lost and David Sedgwick won. Ian Reynolds had a good win against Clive Wismayer and Martin Page ground out a win, and David Malcolm drew. Anthony Kent had looked like winning, but could only draw, and James Aldred, getting short of time, thought it best to agree to a draw. At the end Julian Farrand lost on board 1 against Andrew Whiteley, and Ian Hunnable eventually beat Steven Walsh, though Steven put up valiant resistance. So, an 8½-5½ win, slightly more comfortable than is usually the case against the Legal League, with our only losses coming on the top and bottom boards! GWN |
