The 2009-10 Competition

This season we nearly lost Legal, as Daniel Tunkel and David Auger had both moved on and were no longer available to run the show. However, we are grateful to Shaun Tracy for picking up the reins and keeping Legal in the picture, albeit with a late start.

Meanwhile. Banks beat Insurance for the first time in 12 seasons. Insurance's woe continued as they defaulted two boards and Commercial took advantage to win 8-4.

Banks' form, however, continued apace as they thumped the defending Champions, Commercial, 9-3, before wrapping up the competition with a clean sweep, beating Legal 8-4.

Legal and Insurance shared the point - the first score for either team in this season's competition - leaving only one match outstanding: Legal v Commercial which has been fixed for 21st June. Both sides have something to play for as second place is still up for grabs.

In the meantime we afford hearty congratulations to Banks for a sterling performance. Ian Heppell has put in a lot of effort to turn round Banks' fortunes. Banks won the Bronowski in 2006, but you have to go back to 1997 to find their previous win before that. But when did they last win with a clean sweep? asks Hepps.

History is normally written by the victors, but hey! why not hear the losers' excuses?

Comments by Anthony Kent:

Last year, we managed to win this match through our greater strength on the bottom 6 boards, counteracting our grading deficit on the top 6.

This year, a similar pattern emerged, but the lower boards were more evenly matched. William Diffey won in 19 moves when his opponent misjudged an attacking opportunity. Thereafter, only Mike Wiltshire managed a win.

Commercial v Insurance

Insurance had a full and representative team for the original date of 9th March, but there was no venue available. For the rearranged date, Insurance could raise only 10 boards, whilst Commercial fielded a full and representative team. On the contested boards, Commercial led 6-4.
