Membership Code

There are six categories of membership,

three for which a subscription is payable:

— President & Vice Presidents

— "London" Members

— "Country" Members

and three which are exempt from subscription:

— Life Vice Presidents

— Life Members

— Honorary Members

The rates of subscription for the first three categories are set out in the Club Rules. Membership of the three categories exempt from subscription may be conferred by a General Meeting, in which case it applies on a continuing basis. In addition, the Committee is empowered in special circumstances to confer Honorary Membership in respect of one particular season, but with the possibility of annual renewal.

Members of the Club are entitled to take part in all aspects of the Club's affairs, subject to payment of any entry fees required for specific events. The Club currently publishes for Members a programme leaflet, an Annual Report and a Club magazine, ChessIns.

Offices participating in the over-the-board Inter-Office Competitions* or the Inter-Office Correspondence Competition ("participating offices") are required to be represented by a minimum number of members of the Club (as indicated by the Committee from time to time) in respect of each competition. Office Representatives must be members of the Club. A participating office is entitled to count towards its membership representation for each competition any of its number who pay their own subscriptions or are Life members. A Minimum Entry Fee is set by the Committee for each for the two Competitions. Subscriptions paid in respect of particular members, whether by their office or themselves, count towards the Minimum Entry Fee for one Competition but, not both. It is expected that all members included in an office's quota are bona fide participants in the format of competition under which they are declared. If it appears that an abuse of this principle has occurred, the Committee may require additional subscription(s) to make up the quota of memberships required.

Employees or pensioners of participating offices who are not Club members may represent their office in either the Inter-Office Competitions or the Inter-Office Correspondence Competition. They may also represent the Club in its matches against external opposition, but in one format only, OTB or Correspondence. They may not participate in any other Club activity.

A further restriction applies to ex-employees who are not members of the Club, but are eligible, under Inter-Office Competition rule 6a(ii) or Inter-Office Correspondence Competition rule 7(ii), to participate in Inter-Office competition. They may not represent the Club in its matches against external opposition nor participate in any other Club activity.

Players who are eligible for Club membership but who are not Club members may, with the approval of the Committee, represent the Club against external opposition in either correspondence matches or "friendly" over-the-board matches (but not both in the same season), subject to the payment of a Board Fee of £2 per match. Such players shall be termed "Guest Players", and shall not be entitled to any other benefits of Club membership.

This Code is to be read in conjunction with the Rules of the Club.

* These competitions comprise the Inter-Office league, the Bowring King and the Durham knockout competitions
