Variants

The Club has engaged in two main chess variants and this section of the Website is devoted to them: Four-handed Chess and Kriegspiel.

Four-handed chess is a partnership game like bridge and requires a special board, equivalent to an ordinary board with three extra rows of squares added on each side. Four contrasting sets of pieces are also required. All described in the pages on 4-H Chess.

Kriegspiel is a fiendish derivative where the players do not see each others moves! The assistance of a third party, the umpire, is required along with three ordinary sets and boards (one each for the two players plus another for the umpire. All described in the page on Kriegspiel together with a specimen game.
