England captain Freddie Williams missed the final match (though was non-riding captain in the pits) when he broke his collarbone on 26.02, when he collided with Brian Crutcher while racing for the South African Match Race Championship. MacLeod in the South African press - the Star (Johannesburg), the Rand
Daily Mail, the Natal Daily News, and Sapa (South African Press
Association) - has now confirmed that all seven matches were officially
part of the series. This series was run on tracks controlled by Buddy Fuller's South African Riders' Association, and outside the juridiction of the South African Control Board, who declared all the matches to be unofficial, and all the competing riders suspended. The England captain, Alan Hunt, died in a racing accident at Johannesburg on 01.02. Eric Boothroyd and Ron Mountford took over the captaincy for the final two tests. |
