Arthur's Homes

Arthur was born on 23rd April 1878 - his next record is that of the 1881 census where he is living with Thomas and Ann, his parents and 7 brothers and sisters at 62 Spring Road, Ipswich

Number 62 is one of a pair of houses quite close to the Railway Viaduct and across from the allotments.  It is the terracotta painted house on the right of this pair.

It is quite a busy road

By the time of the 1891 census the family had moved to Holly Cottage in Ringham Road.  There is no reference to the name now visible but from the Kelly's Directory I confirmed that there were originally four cottages on the right of Ringham Road as you move down from Cauldwell Hall Road. Thomas and his family were at the second one down which works out to be  number five.

The family lived in the middle house of this block of three.

Arthur then went off to join the Navy where he served for 12 years.  He returned to Ipswich where he lived at 180 Cauldwell Hall Road.  This house is in a delightful row of terraced houses and number 180 has been restored with great care and looks wonderful!

It was from this house that Arthur left for his action in World War One.  It was also the scene of his triumphant return, after recovering from his wounds at the battle of Loos when he won his Victoria Cross, and the official welcome back from the people of Ipswich.

With the money which was collected and donated by the people of Ipswich, Arthur bought 354 Foxhall Road in Ipswich.
