What is a Podcast and how do I listen to it?
Podcasts are downloadable shows, usually either audio(radio) or video.
Dial P For Pulp is an audio podcast that is produced in the MP3 format, This means that once you have downloaded it (we will get to that bit later) you can listen to it either directly on your computer or you can transfer it to another device such as an mp3 player, an iPod or a PDA.
You do not "need" an iPod to listen to a podcast!
So, how do I get the mp3 file in the first place?
There are several different ways to get hold of the podcasts.
"Save Link As" or "Save Target As", depending on your browser.
If you like the show (of course you will) and you would like to receive each new one as they are released, you can subscribe to the podcast. This is where the syndicated feeds to the left come in!
Probably the simplest way to subscribe is to use iTunes from Apple. If you already have iTunes on your computer just click on the button on the left.
If you don't want to use iTunes there is plenty of other software that you use. You will either want to use a Podcast Aggregator or an RSS Reader.
Podcast Aggregators are designed specifically to download podcasts.
RSS Readers are designed to subscribe to any RSS feed, and so are useful for many different applications. Some RSS Readers (but not all) can be set up to download podcasts automatically. A list of RSS Readers can be found HERE.
Once you have installed your aggregator/reader of choice you will need to copy the link (from the Syndication/Feeds list on the left of this page), by right clicking and then clicking on the "Copy Link Location" or "Copy Shortcut" option. You can then paste it into your software of choice.
Firstly you can manually download the file to your computer. On the left of this page you will see a section called Direct Downloads, if you click on any of the links in that section your browser will open the
file directly. If you would like to download the file rather than listening to it in your web browser, you can click the right mouse button over one of those links and choose
