He was educated at Eton where he was an oppidan in 1844 and King's scholar in 1846. In 1851 he went to Trinity College, Oxford where he was the Blount scholar. First class honours in "mods" in 1853; first class honours in "Lit. Hum" in1855. In 1852 and 1853 he won the University fours rowing as bow.Fellow of Exeter College in 1855, and tutor 1857 to 1863.He was "conduct" (Chaplain) of Eton College August - December 1863.Vicar of Merton, Oxfordshire 1863-1874. Chaplain of St. Paul's Cannes from 1874 to his death and appointed Canon of Gibraltar in 1892.His wife (Constance) From 1868 William had trouble with his throat, trouble that was to last for the rest of his life; and for many years his nerves were in a frightful state. Many Sunday services had to be taken by substitutes though Williamcontinued with his parish visiting. It was on account of his health that William resigned the living of Merton and went to Cannes.See HWW for fuller biography
