Family Historian's Dictionary

Ivor Jackson

Introduction

As family historians we have often to read through and try to make sense of documents written by people of many different professions and at many different periods of history. They are also sometimes in a language that is strange to us.

I have put together a collection of some of the abbreviations, legal words, obsolete terminology, heraldic terms, Latin phrases and other bits of vocabulary that I have come across. I have, where I have needed to supplement my own knowledge, looked them up in various encyclopedias, dictionaries and other reference books. This dictionary is not exhaustive; but I offer it in the hope that is helpful.
