Ecclesiastical Courts Courts dealing with judicial cases under Canon Law, including the Bishops' Courts and Archdeacons' Courts; Church courts which dealing with matters such as heresy, church attendance, parish dues, marriage, immorality, slander, wills, perjury, etc.

emancipated Freed from slavery; freed from parental control; of legal age.

enumeration List of people, as in a census; The process of making such a list.

enumerator A person who records the information in a census.

escheat The reversion of property to the state (or feudal lord) on the owner dying without legal heirs.

escheator Officials who held jurisdiction over one or more counties, and were responsible for effecting escheats of land held of the king.

espousal Betrothal which was considered to have almost the same validity as a marriage during the early seventeenth century.

esquire A person qualified to bear arms, but used generally from the 16th century onwards to denote a person who belonged to a family bestowed with arms; also an esquire was next in social precedence below a knight; later bestowed upon solicitors, barristers, and person holding a military or naval commission directly from the Crown.

established Church The official state church.

estate Assets and liabilities of a decedent, including land, personal belongings and debts. The property of a landowner.

estate archives The account books, terriers, surveys, extents and rent books of an estate estate.

event A happening for which the date and place are used for genealogical data on and identification of an individual.

evidence In genealogy, any kind of proof, such as testimony, documents, records, certificates, material objects, etc.

Executor (feminine -Executrix) A person appointed by a testator to carry out the directions and requests in his or her will, and to dispose of the property according to the provisions of the will after his or her death.
