Genealogy The study of one's ancestry, family history, and descent; summary history or table of a person's ancestry.

General Register Office The section of the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys which houses the General Register of Births, Deaths and Marriages, and the following miscellaneous registers:
Marine Register Books - containing the births and deaths of British citizens at sea since 1 July 1837.
Air Register Books - containing the births and deaths of British citizens aboard aircraft registered in the United Kingdom since 1949.
Army Chaplain's Returns - containing births, marriages and deaths of servicemen and families abroad between 1796 and 1880.
Army Returns of Births, Marriages and Deaths, 1881-1995 - containing those events taking place abroad, excluding World War I and World War II.
Army Regimental Registers - containing births, marriages and deaths abroad between 1761 and 1924.
Royal Air Force Returns - containing births, marriages and deaths of personnel abroad since 1920.
Consular Returns - containing births, marriages, and deaths of British subjects in foreign countries since 1849.
Natal and South Africa Field Forces Deaths - containing deaths that took place during the Boer Warr, 1899-1902.
Deaths Abroad of Officers and Men in the Three Services - containing deaths of servicemen who died during World War I and World War II.

Gent. gentleman

gentleman Strictly speaking, a person of gentle birth and next below an esquire in social precedence.

gentry The social class consisting of armigerous, country families and their relatives, who had private incomes and owned country houses.

Gregorian Calendar The calendar which replaced the Julian calendar. The Julian or Old Style calendar was in use in Western Europe until 1752.

Guild There were twio types of guild. The craft guilds consisting of master craftsmen, such as bakers, blacksmiths, carpenters, coopers, shoemakers and others. Merchant guild were organisations of merchants who were authorised to regulate trade in their town. Both still exist in various forms

Given name The name given to a person at birth or baptism; first and middle names.

Glebe Land held by a beneficed clergyman.

goodman In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries a husbandman and others of similar status were so styled, e.g. Goodman Bates.

goodwife The female counterpart of a Goodman. Gore A triangular parcel of arable land. This is the origin of Kensington Gore.

guardian A person lawfully appointed to care for the person of a minor, invalid, incompetent and their interests, such as education, property management and investments.

Guardian am litem A guardian appointed by a court to act in a particular case or suit.
