illegitimate A child born to a mother who was not married to the child's father.
immigrant A person moving into a country from another. Often confused with emigrant, who is someone leaving a country.
impertinent In Chancery proceedings, irrelevant.
ind. On census returns, of independent means.
Indentured servant A person bound into the service of another, especially those bound for a specified number of years, usually seven, in return for transportation to a colony; indentured servants could and many were sold to the highest bidder after arrival and did not serve the person who paid their passage.
indirect evidence Circumstantial evidence; evidence not based on personal knowledge or observation, but from other facts from which deductions or conclusions are drawn.
infant The legal meaning of infant has varied from period to period and place to place; in ancient times, a child under age fourteen. In present British law under the age of majority (18)

Inquisitor The person appointed to report the shortcomings of parishioners to the Archdeacon's Court.
instant (Usually abbreviated, inst.) Of the current month; of this month.
intercommon Pasture land shared by adjoining parishes.
International Genealogical IndexA computer index of names submitted to the Family History Department of the LDS Church for processing; in 1996 the IGI included approximately 180 million names contained in birth, baptism, and marriage records.
intestate A person who dies without a will; Dying without a will.
inventory An itemized list of property owned by a deceased person.
