T., t. Testament.

tapster A person who draws and serves drink in a tavern or ale-house.

tax list A list of persons who have been assessed for payment of taxes.

Tenant-in-Chief A person holding feudal land directly from the king.

tenement Originally a manor; later any land and buildings.

terre tenant The lord of a manor or freeholder who occupied the land.

terrier A book describing the site, boundaries etcetera of land

testis Witness.

tithable Liable to a tithe (see below).

tithe Money due under Canon (Church) Law as a tax for support of the church or clergy. One-tenth of the yield of the land.

Title Deed A document transferring property from one person to another.

Toleration ActAn Act of Parliament passed in 1689 allowing Protestant dissenters (other than Unitarians) to worship publicly after organizing and registering their independent meeting-places.

tombstone A stone, generally inscribed with the name of the deceased and other information, erected as a memorial.

total descent A chart showing male and female lines of descent.

train band A 17th century militia.

transcript A verbatim copy of an original document in its entirety.

transportation ; transported convict The 1597 Vagrancy Act allowed Quarter Sessions justices to send guilty persons from the United Kingdom, often for quite trivial offences, to places "beyond the seas," such as the American colonies and Australia.
