Ten Accolades for Merit Colour Prints

Guest judge Mr Peter McMullin from Plymstock entertained a packed hall of Ivybridge & District Camera Club members on the last Tuesday in May as he critiqued over 70 images entered for the 3rd Merit competition of the year. It was a busy evening and members even had to cut short their tea break to get all the judging done in time.

Despite the large entry Peter McMullin gave every print and slide his full attention, praising where appropriate and constructively criticising where required. “The colour prints in particular were of excellent quality”, he said as he proceeded to give two commended grades and four highly commended as well as six placed prints.

First place went to club chairman Keith Miller with Flying High, a gritty motorbike and sidecar image. Second place went to John Taylor of South Brent with Red Square and third was given to Margaret Martin from Ivybridge with Workshop at Heligan Gardens. Three places down to 6th were awarded to Geoff Brimblecombe, Sylvia Wilson and Gert Landers while the commended accolades were shared by Keith Miller, Neil Doggett, Geoff Brimblecombe, Norman Simpson and Sue Bishop.

The monochrome print competition rules allow one colour tone and it was such a print that won first place for Neil Doggett from Ivybridge with Bigbury Beach Blight a stormy image of a rock pool with a floating green bottle. David Rayner, also from Ivybridge took both second and third positions with a triptych, The Life and Death of a Cut Rose and a sepia toned image, Horse & Carriage Awaits.

First place in the slide competition was awarded to Ivybridge member, Colin Wilkins with Lyme Regis a wide angle beach rock formation scene while second place went to Alan Davey, also from Ivybridge with Looking for Nectar. Colin Wilkins also took third place and competition secretary, Keith Mullin gained Highly Commended with Orchid

A week later David Rayner hosted the club’s practical evening showing members and guests how to obtain the Curves command in Photoshop Elements and how to use curves to control the distribution of tones in digital images.
