The
sleepy Devon village of South Brent was the setting
for over 100 photographers to meet on May 10th, when
Ivybridge & District Camera Club hosted the annual
photographic battle between all of Devon’s camera
clubs at the village hall. This year thirteen of the
county’s clubs took part, each providing a panel
of 5 photographs on a theme and a portfolio of 5 digitally
projected images.
The day started
with clubs setting up their individual panels of photographs
so that they looked ‘just right’ for their
closely-kept secret themes. This was the first opportunity
for clubs to see what their competitors were offering,
not that they had a lot of time to do this as it was
soon time for the hall to be closed for the private
viewing of the judge, Mr Brian Galbraith CPAGB of Wadebridge.
Later in the afternoon the hall was opened for refreshments
and public viewing of the panels. In the evening Mr
Galbraith treated an audience of some 130 people to
his entertaining appraisal of the panels and after a
buffet meal, to his adjudication of the projected images.
The winning
club panel was judged to be Plymouth Camera Club’s
‘Stairways’, with ‘Ballet Dream’
from Newton Abbot Photographic Club coming second and
‘Spanning the Day’ from Ivybridge &
District camera Club making third place.
Plymouth also
came first in the digital portfolio section with Exmouth
Photo Group coming second and Paignton Photographic
Club making third.
The judge awarded
best individual print to Gordon Aspland of Newton Abbot
PC and best digitally projected image to John Widdows
of Plymouth CC. Brenda Hutchins of Plymouth CC and Margaret
Martin of Ivybridge CC were awarded second and third
placed individual prints respectively while Eve Mathews
of Exeter CC and Lorna Webber of Barnstaple CC were
honoured with second and third placed digitally projected
images respectively.
Many thanks are
due to the 20 helpers from the Ivybridge & District
Camera Club who made the day run smoothly on all fronts.
During the day
representatives from this year’s participating
clubs met and agreed small changes for next year, mainly
to drop film slides completely and to adopt the PAGB
standard for digital file sizes. It was encouraging
to see that the event was supported well with Exeter
returning and Phoenix (Holsworthy) joining the battle
for the first time. Only one or two ‘old hands’
were unable to take part this year. With Newton Abbot
to run the event in 2010 and Paignton agreeing to run
the event in 2011 the next few years look to be confirmed
as super events.
Visitors are
always welcome to club meetings and we meet at Bittaford
Community Hall from 7:30 pm on the second and fourth
Tuesdays in the month. Our programme, members’
photographs and much more are all available elsewhere
on this web site.
