Western National 1592
NFJ592M

1592 is a vehicle that I have a fond affiliation with.  It was the first bus that I bought for preservation.

1592 is a Bristol LH with a ECW bus body and a seating capacity of 43.  She was delivered to Western National in December 1973 and gained the registration number NFJ592M and fleet number 1592.  She was allocated to Torpoint depot and operated the various country routes from that depot.  But her main aim was to operate the 80/81 services over the Torpoint ferry to Plymouth.  She carried the NBC leaf green livery and double N logo's.

Then in 1982 her operational career with Western National had come to an end, VR's were beginning to take over the Torpoint ferry work and so she was acquired by Plymouth City Transport.  They at the time were starting to introduce some rural work and this suited 1592.  She was painted into the Cream and Red livery and carried the 'Plymouth CountryBus' fleetname.  Her life was not a great one with Plymouth CT and she spent a loan period with Thamesdown Transport in Swindon.

She then moved onto a local Majorette troop in the Plymouth area and then onto Wood Brothers Travel of Buckfastleigh in 1988.  They used her mainly on a school contract connecting Totnes with South Brent and occasionally on Stage Carriage work.  Then in the Autumn of 1998 the school contract regulations of Devon County Council insisted that all school buses had to be fitted with seatbelts and the cost of doing this was not justified.  So she was withdrawn and used as a seat store for about nine months.

We found her on an evening visit to the yard one night on the middle of July and a friend of mine made some enquiries about her and she was bought for preservation.  She made the journey to Mid Devon with no hiccups whatsoever.  Then in the spring of 2000 he decided that he did not have the money for her restoration so I stepped in and bought her.  She then made the journey back to Buckfastleigh to the South Devon Railway again with no hiccups.  Some mechanical work and minor body tidying up was undertaken and an MOT gained.  She was rallied during the early part of the 2001 rally season until 327 and a buyer for 1592 came along and she was once again moved on.

She is still kept at the South Devon Railway and is currently undergoing preparation for a repaint and some new window rubbers.  Providing everything goes OK she will be appearing on the rally season for 2002 resplendant in the NBC leaf green livery.
