John Charles Stephen Elkins was born in 1877 in Oswego County, New York, America but lived there for only a few months before his parents came back to Wiltshire, England. He was the second of seven children, his older sister Harriet also being born in America. The 1881 census states Harriet was born in North America, Mexico, Oswego County (which is in the state of New York), but unfortunately John's exact birth place is not so clear and the town is very difficult to decipher. It looks like Rattilla or Ratvilla, but I've found no such place in Oswego. His father Luke worked as a Labourer also in private gardens.

John worked as a Gardener in private gardens all his life. In 1901 he was visiting friends in Leicester, Leicestershire. At some point he must have traveled to Huntingdonshire where he met Alice. They moved around a lot after that from Surrey to Huntingdonshire to Buckinghamshire and finally Bedfordshire.

Alice Gaunt was born in 1873 and was the second of five children. Before marrying she worked as a Parlour Maid. Family rumours hinted that she was quite high up in her career, but census records show differently, although maybe things changed inbetween 1901-03. Her father William worked as a Bricklayer.

Children
John and Alice had six children, my Grandmother being the third. Their first child died very young and seems his birth was never registered. No-one knew about him until a few years back when his death certificate was discovered.
