TGF Churchills Cafe Bar arrived on the scene
towards the end of the 90s to a sigh of relief from Canterbury's
nightlife-seekers. Finally, The Bizz/The Works' (now Baa Bars)
monopoly on the city's nightclub scene had been broken. Thank God For Churchills
(what 'TGF' stood for was never really confirmed officailly, but it's pretty
obvious) really was an apt name after well over a decade with absolutely no
choice. Of course, it's not like this sparked a clubbing revolution or anything
as the choice still pales compared with other university cities. The place was
much smarter than the Bizz/Works, and people regularly queued up down the
street, as they still do for its current incarnation.
Churchills was taken over and rebranded Chicago Rock Cafe in 2008. Chicago's
was, and still is, a national chain of nightclubs (Churchills had a sister club
with the same name in Southend, which actually still exists, although the 'TGF'
has since been dropped). The interior didn't change much as a result of the
change of ownership. In 2008 Chicago's became Chill
(continuing a 'Ch' theme!), another nationwide chain from the same company.
We've not been yet, so don't know how much it changed. |
