On the cusp of the
nationwide change in attitudes to pubs and bars, this place was pretty unique. A
kebab shop that was also a bar, but it happened to be the only place in
Canterbury that wasn't a nightclub but opened later than what the rest of the
pubs were doing at the time. We've kept our 2004 (or so - it may have been
earlier) review pretty much intacte as it gives a good insight into just how
frustrating it was getting a beer in Canterbury in the early 00s:
"Reopened again in autumn 2001 after its second complete makeover in two years (it was gutted by fire in 1999 just a year or so after it first opened). Jasper's is Canterbury's only late night alternative to clubbing at the weekend, opening until 12 weekdays, and 1am weekends. Jasper's doesn't serve draught beer, but at £2 a bottle, the beer (Stella Artois) is reasonably priced. A novelty since reopening is that the bar and kebab/pizza shop now occupy the same space, rather than being next door to each other as previously, so you can order you post-pub kebab whilst finishing your last pint. The place is dead during normal pub opening hours, however. A recent development is that you can no longer have a beer without actually ordering some food. Possibly another example of what we believe to be unnecessarily old-fashioned view on modern pub and bar culture on the part of the City Council."
