How it lasted as long as it did I'll never know. A local's local which never seemed to attract any locals on the few occasions that we popped in. The bar was about a metre from the door and there was very little room. A pity as it was the first pub you came to if you arrived at Canterbury West station. An interesting quote from a visitor to the an early version of this site in 1997 from St. Louis, USA: "The Locomotive wasn't the place to announce to a drunk that I was American and he made the choice to hit me." Amazing that anyone could ever stay long enough to get drunk.

The first thing you saw when you arrived was an unnecessary newspaper-headline sign outside the front door saying "Phew! What a Scorcher" (photo taken a few months after it closed). The building was destroyed by a gas explosion in July 2002, with one fatality. A residential block was built in its place, leaving no trace of the pub.
