The Front Garden
The builders
laid turf in the front
garden and planted a patch of evergreen shrubs and two flowering crab trees.

This is our front garden in Summer 1998.
In the Autumn of 1998 we
removed a great deal of turf, moved shrubs and dug in a lot of coarse grit and
compost to improve the heavy clay soil.
I planted a selection of flowering
shrubs, roses and herbaceous perennials, together with Spring flowering bulbs.

Two and a half years later and
the border is filling out nicely. White climbing
roses 'Iceburg', Picea pungens 'Hoopsii', Lavender 'Hidcote' and Phormium tenax
are among the plants here - June 2001

This is the border in April 2005. Because there are a lot of
evergreens it keeps some interest going all year round. Unfortunately we
had to remove the Phormium because although labelled "Bronze Baby" it became
Bronze Giant!

This view from the bedroom window (June 2002) shows the shape of the front
garden

The same border in June 2004 Look at how the neighbours' Robinia
has grown!
In Spring
2006 we decided to remove the grass from the front garden and replace it
with chippings. The area in front of the front door was reinforced
to enable us to park a car there occasionally.

We added some paving stones, a sundial, ceramics and large stones to add
interest.

..... and in late August

Erigeron karvinskianus between the
paving stones and young lavenders. The large red-leaved plants are
Ricinus communis

Here are pictures of the
front garden taken during the Spring and Summer of 2008
