My
article
on use of water based primer in Popular Flying Magazine November 2007
Notes since publishing the
article.
Spraying: I use a Sealey
HVLP 2002 spray gun with a 1.8mm nozzle with B123 thinned down.
Riveting: I don't advise riveting
for at least 2 days and even then make sure the parts dry at room
temperature and not in a cold garage/workshop. Use duct tape/masking
tape on your rivet gun/bucking bars, remove your watch and cover any
rings with gloves. This is because B123 does scratch easily during the first
few days as the directions state clearly it takes 7 days at room
temperature/< 85% humidity to fully harden. NB. B123 will
never be as robust/hard as two part epoxy and I find these limitations
quite acceptable for the safety reasons mentioned in the article.
Use: I am using this as an
interior primer only for additional corrosion prevention. My external
primer will be chosen by the professional who sprays my aircraft.
Please let
me know your experiences - good, bad and the ugly and I'll print
them here.
"My Inspector is happy with me
using the Bulls eye primer, in fact after he did the thumbnail test I
told him it was water based, he was very surprised"
