FROM WILLIAM FISHER (BORN about 1781) TO JOSEPH FISHER (BORN 1878)

INTRODUCTION

Below is a summary of the information obtained to date together with its sources for the family from William Fisher (my great-great-great-grandfather) a farmer born in Tipton, Staffordshire in around 1781 down to my grandfather, Joseph FISHER, who was born in Tipton in 1878 and left it in 1895 to join the Royal Marines.
My grandfather's direct line of descent is shown in red.

SUMMARY OF INFORMATION
A : WILLIAM FISHER I, born in TIPTON in about 1781
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES :
24 February 1782 The St Martins, Tipton general register records the christening of a William FISHER on that day with a date of birth given as 22 February 1781 which may be our man - pity that "William" was such a popular name! (It would mean that he was 70 at the 1851 Census after all!) The parents' names are given as William and Mary Fisher.
29 August 1814 The St Martins, Tipton marriage register records a marriage between "William FISHER", batchelor, and "Nancy SAUNDERS", spinster, which is certainly our couple (See the birth certificate of their son, Gaius, ). Both were described as from "this parish" and whilst she signed the register, he made his mark! The marriage was conducted by "John Howells, Curate" and the witnesses were Samuel Saunders and Maria Taylor who both signed the Register. Neither addresses nor information on parents was given.

20 August 1815. On the christening of Josh. FISHER and Mary FISHER it gives the parents as "Wm. & Nancy FISHER", their father's occupation as "Labourer" and their "abode" as Netherton. (This is about 1.5 miles from Dudley and about 3 miles from Tipton.) It seems likely that "our" William and Nancy are the parents named.
26 August 1821. On the christening of their sons, William and John it gives the parents as William and Ann FISHER, the father's occupation as "Farmer" and the abode as "Puppy(?) Green".
27 January 1822. On the christening of their son, Joseph, it gives the parents as William and Ann FISHER, the father's occupation as "Farmer" and the abode as "Puppy Green".
26 December 1824 On the christening of their son, Thomas, the parents are given as William and Ann FISHER, the father's occupation is described as "Farmer" and their "abode" is given as Puppy Green.
3 December 1826. On the christening of their son, James, it gives the parents as William and Ann FISHER, the father's occupation as "Farmer" and the abode as "Puppy Green".
5 April 1829. On the christening of their son, Samuel, it gives the parents as William and Ann FISHER, the father's occupation as as "Farmer" and the abode as "Puppy Green".
26 February 1832. On the christening of their daughter, Caroline FISHER the parents were named as William & Ann FISHER, the father's occupation was described as "Labourer" and the "abode" given as Tipton.
20 October 1833. On the christening of their daughter, Hannah FISHER, her parents are given as William & Ann FISHER with the father's occupation given as "Farmer" and the "abode" as Tipton.
2 April 1837. On the christening of their son, Thomas, it gives the parents as William and Ann FISHER, the father's occupation as "Farmer" and the abode as "Pitchfork's(?) Farm".   2 October 1840. The birth certificate of their son, Gaius, gives his parents as William FISHER, "Farmer", and his mother as Ann FISHER (formerly SAUNDERS) thereby confirming the marriage entry given above. William was the informant, his address was given as "Lodge Farm" and he still had to make his mark!   1841 Census. Aged "60". Address: Lodge Farm, Park Lane, Tipton. Born in Staffordshire. Described as "Farmer". Presumed wife "Ann Fisher" aged 50 and born in Staffordshire.
1851 Census. Aged 68. Address: 26 Park Lane, Tipton. Born in Tipton. Described as "Farmer of 40 acres", Wife "Ann Fisher" aged 57 and born in Wednesbury, Staffs.
The ages of both William and Ann given in the 1841 and 1851 Censuses are clearly inconsistent. In the 1841 Census adults' ages were supposed to be rounded DOWN to the nearest 5 years whilst in the later Censuses the actual ages were supposed to be entered. If the "1851" ages are correct then the ages entered into the 1841 Census should have been 55 and 45 respectively. Perhaps the Enumerator got confused and simply rounded to the nearest 5 years! On the other hand they may just have given him the wrong ages!
1861 Census William does not appear but "Nancy Fisher" of 84 Park Lane, Tipton is described as a widow aged 70. (She seems to have aged 12 years in the previous 10 years!)
[On examination of the Census returns referred to above it seems likely that Lodge Farm, 26 Park Lane and 84 Park Lane may have been the same dwelling.]
1862 Probate Record The Probate record from the Lichfield District Office shows William's Will of 1859 as proved by his son Gauis, Boatbuilder on 31 July 1862. It gives the date of death as 13 March 1862 but this must have been an error for 1861 since his wife was a widow by the 1861 Census! Some of the delay in proving the Will may have been to allow Gauis to be of full age (21) which he was not until October 1861.
William and Nancy FISHER appear to have had 12 children :
