Interestingly, just as I completed this reconstruction, Kathy and I both noticed, in the background of one of Mellaart's "restored" images a plaster installation exactly like this illustration!

This image came out of discussions with Rissa about the possible use and domestication of birds at Catalhoyuk.

g3113: Builders' Deposit in Building 44.

This reconstruction shows Building 44 under construction, looking towards the southeastern corner of the main space. The illustration came out of discussions between myself and Roddy about the deposits he excavated in the construction phases of the platform and bench.

Painting done for Ian's book, The Leopard's Tale. I had Basak and Lori stand behind me while I was painting, correcting me at every brush-stroke! After I got back to the UK the painting had to be lifted from its temporary foamboard backing and got a little damaged. I should repaint this at some point.

Painted for Ian's book. This image was based upon an original drawing done for the Science Museum of Minnesota that Ian particularly liked.

This reconstruction shows the building with its features and "burials" beneath the matting/plaster layer.

g3185: Lamb Burial, sp. 112.

This reconstruction view shows the burial of the lamb next to the old man, looking north across the space. Although this wasn't eventually used in Antiquity (where Rissa originally wanted her article on the lamb burial to appear), it has appeared in other publications.

g3194: Weasel Scat burial.

This image was drawn for Emma, for an article she was putting together. Originally I had something much more crowded, but Emma particularly wanted an illustration that showed the sorrow of the act of burial. I thought this was a nice, human point of view for Emma to suggest.

g3220: Building 52.

The horn installation and the wattle/daub screen. Reconstruction view looking west. The details of the installation and the screen were taken from discussions with Mira and Doru. At the time this painting was done, we didn't know that the building extended further to the east - but knowing that now, it would be an idea if I redid this painting putting the installation in more of a context.

g3230: View over Catalhoyuk rooftops.

Although the painting is unfinished, it was one of three rough drafts showing a panorama over the roofs, and depicting various activities related to buildings and their life histories: construction, use, demolition and change of use. The panorama features buildings, middens, penning areas and other structure types.

g3263: Building, IST Trench.

"Earlier", pre-burning phase. A number of details were included based on conversations with the excavators: the hanging basket, the wooden screen and the hanging matting in the background. The view is to the southwest. There is a version of this with people added in to give a sense of scale, but the IST team preferred this view.

g3269: Building 44, South Area.

Reconstruction view looking NW across ladder emplacement and platform to western room. The dark band is the line of glossy, black material Roddy identified as possibly being an application of oil or wax - possibly aromatic or intended for vermin control ?

g3279: Building 41, 40x40.

Reconstruction view looking NW across possible Byzantine agricultural building (barn?). The function of this structure is still unclear, but its size suggests storage, probably of agricultural produce. The building had at least two phases of construction - a main building (with at least one wing that remains unexcavated) with an addition to the south: the 'porch' being built in this view. The major domo's wax tablet shows a crane. Doru suggested that two post-hole features next to the foundation trench might have been for the placement of a crane. This pencil drawing is a rough draft for painting that I've currently got half-finished.

Reconstruction of the rooms that Jonathan and Trina excavated. The final draft of this illustration will be going in a new exhibit in the Konya Museum.
