Life is for Enjoyment and Fun

The first practical step is to find a qualified trainer who will be willing to train you and a club that requires the services of a junior coach.  Read this manual thoroughly, research the subject yourself and form your own opinions.

Next, let your trainer guide you through the practical syllabus and study the coaching points on each particular stroke.  These can be used to form part of your lesson.

When you have covered the syllabus, apply to go on a coaching course, as this will probably be the best way to improve your technique for taking class lessons and will help develop your understanding and methods of giving individual lessons.

You are on the brink of an exciting, new aspect of fencing and you will be surprised at the amount of knowledge you have already soaked up and how much more there is to seek out.  You must keep your mind open and have the ability to sift information and store ideas that will be of use to you.  Concentrate all the time on improving your own fencing technique along with your coaching technique.

Thinking of becoming a Fencing Coach

Coaching Today is a coaching manual for fencing.  My aim when compiling this manual was to have a book in which a trainee or young coach could have a directory of theoretical information.  It has been written in a logical way, so that the trainee/coach can extract the information as and when he/she wants it.

It is intended to be used in conjunction with practical work undertaken with a qualified trainer.  It must be stressed that you cannot learn to coach solely from this manual; the material contained herein is a comprehensive set of notes covering all aspects of the Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Coaching Certificate, of the British Academy of Fencing.

Good technique and some achievement as a competitive fencer at a reasonable standard, including some experience as an administrator and official will provide a useful background for a prospective coach and will help develop the knowledge and confidence needed, as will a thorough knowledge of the rules.
