This year three of us started our holiday (Tony, Carl and I) by meeting at Gatwick Airport. Carl had a 5 hr drive and Tony & myself having only 2 ˝ hrs. We had a 9 hr flight arriving at Denver Airport, where the coach was ready to take us to Breckenridge. The journey was very picturesque driving through old gold mining camps, the white man’s shacks still standing, even a museum for those who wanted to learn the history of the area. We finally arrived at our hotel in Breckenridge in the heart of Indian territory.
Our condo was roomy and comfortable with a TV in every room and a fully fitted kitchen fridge, freezer, microwave and dishwasher. The amenities were excellent with a deli, restaurant, bars, hot tubs, sauna, fitness room, safe deposit boxes, children’s play room, indoor and outdoor heated swimming pools and ski shop. Each condo had there own ski locker. The complex was set next to the ski slopes with a four man super chair right next to the hotel, so going ski-ing was literally a step out of the door ! The snow conditions were absolutely perfect, with plenty of snow and sunshine the whole of the first week, then the second week it snowed all week and because the temperature was so cold (minus 40 on the coldest day) the snow structure did not deteriorate at all. We had powder all through the week at best it was up to our knees in the trees. Which meant that the ski-ing was excellent with fresh snow everyday, well groomed pistes and plenty of off piste through the trees. It was all a dream come true, and well worth travelling to America for such a sensational experience. |

Although there was a free bus service to go to the other ski resorts in the area, we did have to get to the local bus depot for our first bus, change to another bus which took us to a town central to the area we wanted, and then another bus to where we wanted to ski. Then of course we had the same journey on the return trip. We managed to find a mini bus service which took us door to door and was very cheap. We visited and skied Vail, Beaver Creek, Keystone, Arapaho Basin and of course Breckenridge.
The food was good and not expensive no matter where we went café, deli or restaurant. The only problem was that there was too much on the plate. The American meals were so large that Carl asked for a children’s portion - “that is a children’s portion” was the reply !
The whole event was wonderful, from the accommodation, food, facilities and politeness of the hotel and ski personnel, to the perfect pistes, and the terrific snow conditions with mother- nature adding her extras, heavy snow fall, blizzards and a week of being kissed by the sun – just like the weather on the movies !
Then came the long journey home. We arrived safely, tired but happy after having a most fantastic two weeks ski-ing in the Rocky Mountains, and more snow than we ever dare wished for.
- Looking forward to the next ski trip, wherever we decide to go in 2008. |
