Who are the Volunteers?
CNTN is run, as we said, by nearly 100 volunteers working in four teams on a monthly rota. They are skilled in various ways. Some have good diction (the Readers), others are skilled technically (the Tape Rewinders, the Recorders, the Tape Copiers), while yet more are organised people (the Cuttings Editors and Sub-Editors, etc). Other Volunteers' skills lie in communication with people (the House Visitors). We also have people who are experts at running things (the Committee). Obviously, as Volunteers, they are not paid. |

If they were it would cost us around £25,000 a year - or about £200 per Listener! They do the work for the pleasure of helping others. That is the sort of people they are. The idea of having four times as many volunteers as we might need at any one time was laid down from the start. The founding Chairman, Dr Bill Grundy, recalls |

that it was the initial aim that Volunteers should not be asked to work more than an hour or two, once a month. And this is still achieved today - 30 years after CNTN was founded. We have procedures to deal with five-week months.
That sounds good to me. How can I help? We usually have openings for new Volunteers to help in our service to the visually impaired. More often than not we recruit by word of mouth, but we are also pleased to talk to anyone who feels they might have a skill that can be of use to CNTN. Currently we are "fully staffed" but have a waiting list. Contact our Chairman, Debbie Foss, who also looks after personnel matters and have your name added to the list. Send an e-mail to chairman@cntn.org.uk or drop her a line at Crewe and Nantwich Talking Newspaper, c/o the IRIS Vision Resource Centre, 14 Chapel Street, Crewe, CW2 7DQ.
I don't think I would be of much help to you as a Volunteer, but perhaps I can help with a donation. You certainly can. Click here to see the Friends of TN page. |
