Before defining an Internet Connection via a
modem, I suggest to check that the modem has
be properly identified and is working.
In the Control-Panel, select the
System icon:
(or right-click "My Computer" on the desktop
and select Properties)
Select the tab: "Hardware" and then
use the button "Device Manager"
In the Device-Manager,
expand the
section for Modems:
right-click on your modem and
select to display the "Properties"
Tab : General
Make sure, that the "Device status"
is:
"This device is working properly".
if not, use the button "TroubleShooting"
tab: Modem
Here you can define the "noise" level,
which you modem makes during the
connection process.
Leave the Maximum Port Speed on its
value.
Usually, leave the check-mark on
"Dial-Control" : "Wait
for Dial tone".
(this is usually only required when you are
traveling with a notebook to a different
country, where your modem does not
understand the different dial-tone and where
the modem will therefore not start dialing,
then you can instruct the modem NOT to
wait. In such cases you need to do the check
yourself by listing to the dial-tone)
tab : Diagnostics
click on the button "Query Modem"
your system will then talk to the modem
and display the command-set. You can
ignore the display of these commands,
as long it does display them.
Tab: Driver
In case that Windows has problems using
the modem, you can download from the
manufacturer of the modem a new driver,
which you can use then to "Update"
